The Beast Posted December 18, 2003 Share Posted December 18, 2003 BOSTON -- Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino issued the following statement tonight after the Major League Baseball Players Association rejected the agreement the Red Sox and Alex Rodriguez reached on a restructured contract: "Theo Epstein and his staff worked diligently and tirelessly and reached an agreement with Alex Rodriguez. Theo had the full support of John, Tom, and me along the way. The Red Sox and Rangers had agreed to the players to be involved in this transaction and were working toward an agreement on financial considerations to be included. A lot of time and effort has been invested on all sides to reach this critical point, but the Players Association rejected the agreement Alex took to them and, instead, proposed radical changes. It is a sad day when the Players Association thwarts the will of its members. The Players Association asserts that it supports individual negotiations, freedom of choice, and player mobility. However, in this high-profile instance, their action contradicts this and is contrary to the desires of the player. We appreciate the flexibility and determination Alex and Cynthia Rodriguez have shown in their effort to move to Boston and the Red Sox. It has already been a fruitful off-season for the Red Sox, and we will continue to pursue all available avenues in our ongoing quest to improve our team as we look forward to 2004 and beyond." I can't believe that the Union has the power to say that a member can't take a pay cut even if he wants to. I realize the players don't want to let the owner's be able to cut their pay whenever, but shouldn't ARod be able to waive this right? He agreed to the contract after all. Boston and Texas said they settled on the players involved in the A-Rod trade, so all that's left to be dealt with is the contract. The MLBPA rejected the proposed deal and countered with a different proposal, which was unacceptable to the Red Sox. It's possible that Selig will step in and try to get the union out of the deal. "The basic agreement contains a rule that requires any special covenant to be an actual or potential benefit to the player," MLB labor lawyer Rob Manfred said. "In a situation like the current situation, where there was a restructuring, where the player was getting something and the club was getting something, (MLBPA official) Gene Orza is not the final arbitrator on whether the restructuring provides an actual or potential benefit to the player. The arbtraitior would have to decide if Selig has the right to step in and approve the deal. If he rules that Selig can, then the way the RedSox had it worked out goes down.
