toasty
seattle's signing of spiezio seems to cut likelyhood of valentin trade....
southsideirish
We will see. Be patient. Makes it seem like if they made a trade with Valentin that it would either be for Guillen or Winn. Ichiro would move to center if its for Winn. Spezio would play OF. If its for Guillen then he would just provide more power at the SS position which they feel they need. Either player fits our need. Guillen would be nice at 2B, but Winn would fit 2 needs. A leadoff hitter and CF. I am still trying to believe in Willie Harris. He looks solid with the glove and may eventually improve hitting. Time will tell. Randy Winn Year Ag Tm Lg G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG 2003 29 SEA AL 157 600 103 177 37 4 11 75 23 5 41 108 .295 .346 .425 Plus he plays a nice CF, is 29 years old, and makes only 3.3 million this year. He fits. After this we would be very solid up the middle with Olivo, Garciaparra, Harris, and Wynn. We would have a ton of speed especially if Jeremy Reed looks good in spring and takes over for Maggs in RF. I hope KW is actually going after Winn and not Guillen or Garcia. Especially since Garcia will be non tendered.
YASNY
Has anyone heard that Seattle has expressed any interest in Jose, or has it just been speculation on our end?
southsideirish
Supposedly there is a deal in place with Seattle if the trade with Nomar goes through. We are just speculating on who is involved besides Valentin.

I haven't seen any reference to Jose going to Seattle anywhere except here on Soxtalk.
SoxFan562004
Why is Spezio throwing a monkey wrench in this deal now? Hasn't he been signed with the M's (or at least 100%) going there since yesterday?? The fresh rumors started today about a Jose deal

BrandoFan
YASNY, rumors of "Valentin to Seattle is all but done" have been ALL OVER every Sox board and media outlet in Chicago ALL day long. Apparently, now that Vizquel has failed the physical, Sox see a chance to steal Carlos Guillen and save 2.5 Mill while they're at it. I personally can live with Jose and Uribe platooning at SS and/or Jose hitting LH exclusively if Willlie Harris fails miserably and Uribe is forced to cover 2B against LHP.......The way Nomar has hit, ran and fielded in last 3 years, he would not be a huge improvement at SS and you're saving 7 Mill on a deal, well 8 if you count that deferred Mill. Maybe on sports talk radio. I haven't seen anything on the internet, and some of those are "Chicago media outlets". Talk radio, is just like this.... speculating fans. I'd just like to see something a bit more concrete before I start looking for this deal to happen.
sox-r-us
I live in the Northwest and get Seattle radio here There is no talk about any Valentin trade here I will not be surprised if we play Val at 2B this year

BrandoFan
I will not be surprised if we play Val at 2B this year You know, if Valentin can muster a 675-700 OPS as a lefty-versus-LHP, I wouldn't mind having him around to play 2B even if Garciappara comes here. That would be one hellava range and DP between those two slingers, lol. Freddy Garcia can stick his 6+ Mill arbitration money where a needle can't reach. Why? 'Cuz he is a problem child whose 2-year ERA AWAY from Safeco confines is 4.70....and as if that wasn't enough, in the last 3 years, Royals, our biggest divisional opponent, has been beeting the living s*** out of him (ERA of 6.40). I doubt if I'd pay him 3-4 Mill at this point. . Now if it's Carlos Guillen for Valentin swap staight-up (why would Seattle do it?), then ok, fine. Come to think of it, Guillen not a defensive wiz by any means (a touch better than Val tho), can't run as well as Valentin and has averaged some 85 OPS points LESS in the last 3 seasons.....so let's hope the 2 Mill difference in salaries will be spent wisely because you're losing overall production on the deal. BrandoFan
I don't think you are going to see Jose bat lefty against LHP. Ever. Have you seen his OPS from the right side in the last 2 years? I am talking about low 400s (as compared to 850 from left one)....Kerry frigging Wood out-hit him, for crying out loud! He couldn't bunt for worse from the left side if he tried....And ANY manager who doesn't have the balls to tell Valentin to switch around or SHUT THE f*** UP AND RIDE THE PINE should be fired IMMEDIATELY. YMMV
Pastime
Yas, ESPN News had a small mention of Seattle's interest in Jose Valentin earlier tonight. I was heading out the door to work when Mrs. Pastime mentioned it to me as I walked out. I don't understand it, except that Seattle has a nice lineup with hitters who hit for nice averages and pretty good OPS, so maybe they think they can be okay having a guy like him in the lineup and batting 8th - his "pop" and leadership can offset his .238 average and sometimes-suspect glovework. He would give them some power from the SS position, and that team desperately needed power down the stretch last year. Just a thought. That's the most solid post about any legitimate interest by Seattle I've seen yet.

103 mph screwball
Why can't the Sox platoon him with Uribe? Jose would hit almost as manny HR and have a higher average. Uribe would at least add speed and D when he played. Jose, when he sat, would be good as a pinch hitter. Expensive for a platoon player? Sure, but cheaper than Nomar and I think the combined production wouldn't be that far off. I'd give serious thought to moving Nomar to the Angels for pitching. I'd go get Brian Roberts to play second and lead off and platoon Uribe/Valentin. Not as much star marketing power but winning is the biggest draw. 2b Roberts ss Valentin/Uribe lf Lee dh Thomas 1b Konerko 3b Crede Rf Rowand C Olivo Cf Harris Add Juan Gone for pop if there is any more money. Bring up Borchar and or Reed if Harris or Rowand stink. There are number of ways to improve this line up if Konerko was traded. This team would have to manufacture runs. Hey, that's what Ozzie wants to do.

What can Seattle or Anaheim give us for Nomar? Seattle could give a combination of Garcia, Soiano, Guillen, Winn, or prospects. Angels could give a combo of Washburn, Ortiz, Percival, K-Rod, Erstad, or Kennedy. I like Garcia, Winn, Guillen or Washburn, Kennedy, K-Rod
bulokis
Nomar doesnt want to be with us and he wants 15-20 mil/year so I want to trade him. There's an article I read that the feud b/w Evans and KW seems to be getting bigger, KW can stick it to Evans by trading Nomar to Aneheim instead of the Dodgers.
