Mouse problem

Sidney the cat brought us a present a couple weeks ago... left it in the foyer. It was a itty bitty baby. Then last night after I went to bed I guess Jim took a shower and when he came out there was Sidney standing in the bathroom with another little gift. Surprise was that this one wasn't dead and Jim had to chase it around the bedroom (I slept through it all :D ) Then this morning.. another one.. this time it was dead for sure! What the hell is the deal?? And how do I resolve it without poison that can hurt the cats? I know they are in the garage, just can't find them. I swer they are smaller than 2 inches. Anyone have any suggestions..??

Living in a 105 year old frame house gives me more than my fair share of mouse issues.

I bought those ultrasonic plug-in things from Home Depot, and they work most of the time. However, don't believe the box in regards to how many units you need per square footage. If it says one plug-in covers 500 square feet, you really need two of them. They also don't work 100% of the time, and I'm not sure why. I'll go weeks without seeing any mouse "evidence" and then suddenly we'll have a new friend leaving his calling card. We've also put glue traps and snap traps on shelves in the pantry, where the dog can't reach them. They're not gone completely--the only way to do that is to find where they're coming in, and patch the holes--but the problem has been reduced significantly.

Brian and I used glue traps, but after we caught one and it was wriggling on the glue trap we had to drown it - could stand to see it starve to death (is drowning better than starving?). We thought there was one in the basement, but the glue trap never harvested any and we stopped hearing it there so we figured he either died or let himself out. When we had the glue traps out, we had to be really careful the hamsters didn't make a break for it though because we used some of their treats to bait the traps (I know it says you don't have to, but they worked better when we did bait them).

Guys.. they are not in the house unless the cat brings them in. The little s***s are somewhere in the damn garage. The cats and dog have a pet door to get in the house - which is approx 7 inches from the bottom of the door so I know the mice aren't getting in that way - plus the door itself is heavy and magnatized so I don't think they could push it open if they could get up there.

Wayne.. do you think 1 of those sonic things in the garage would work? Also.. what exactly does it do? Drive them away? Drive them crazy? Cause their heads to explode?

You can never patch the holes completely. I also live in an old house with a basement that's more like a cellar than a basement. I use poison. I put it behind the drawers in the kitchen and in the basement along the baseboards. I have also tried the sonic wave things, but I'm not too sold on them.

It drives them away. They're supposed to work for spiders and such as well.

OK.. maybe I'll get one of those. And FYI, there is no evidence there are any in the basement - which is where someone told us they MUST be coming from. Besides, the door remains closed, the cats have never been down there, and there is no opening at the threshold (I have to blocked because there was a little draft).

HEre's the thing with these though. I lived in an apartment that had a couple mice. Old house, to be expected, etc. There were also bats in the attic and walls. I plugged it in and the bats went apes***... meaning I freaked out because so much noise from the walls. EEEP!

The mouse we found was in the garage. The other one that we thought that was in te basement never surfaced after the time we thought we heard it (maybe one of our hamsters were throwing their voice!).

Jim thinks they are hiding around the corner of the house and every time the garage door goes up it's.. "run guys, run!!!" Little f'ers!

Hmmm... I'm pretty sure we don't have any bats.

One time during communion at the church I used to go to, several bats swooped down at the parishoners...it was hysterical watching everyone freak. The school kids (of which I was one) just watched in amazement.

Steffikins,

If you have a 2-car garage, then I'd put 2 of them in(fortunately, they sell them in 2-unit packs). Place them as far apart as you can. Is the garage attached to the house? How are the cats getting into the garage?

The ultrasonic things create some type of noise field that is very uncomfortable to mice, and just makes them want to not be near it. Kind of like what happens to humans every time a Good Charlotte song plays on the radio. They won't hurt the cats.

3 car garage.. and only 1 wall plug. Now what..? Plug them into the garage door opener outlets? All the way up there..??

The cats and the dog get into the house via a pet door from the garage. It's positioned approx 7 inches up from the bottom of the door (so it's pretty much a hole in the middle of the door) with a heavy plastic magnetic door. They have to push to get it open. The entire door itself does not open.

Will it hurt the dog?

Just put one in the garage wall outlet, that will help at least. Maybe scare them away altogether.

hee, hee. That reminds me of something funny we did when I was on our college radio station. We had a bat in the lobby of the station, which we could see through the class of the studio. So as a joke we set off the emergency broadcast system tone (we had a bat in the studio it was an emergency for us). Anyway the bat started going nuts. Swooping around running into to walls and the glass, finally he found the open door and flew into the stairwell. It was a great time. And as a DJ, you might get the chance to do it
