israel4ever
Wally backman will NOT be with Birmingham this season; he has left the organ-i-zation...probably will be a coach with Francona in Boston! We lose another one!

southsider2k5
No big surprise there. The writing was on the wall during the managerial interviews when no one called Wally.

BrandoFan
Mr. Class Act is gone? Does this mean that DH-types in our AA affiliate won't be asked to steal 20 bases and bunt every other at-bat anymoe?
cwsox
I bet Wally is calling Gardenhire right now...
Rex Hudler
From today's Birmingham News...... Backman Not Coming Back Does this mean that DH-types in our AA affiliate won't be asked to steal 20 bases and bunt every other at-bat anymoe? Not sure what you are hinting at there, but Backman made a difference in winning more games than any Minor League Manager I have watched. His game management was superb. Texsox
I hope he realized the mistake he made and doesn't repeat it. That was monumentaly stupid.
MurcieOne
I could give a s*** less what was reported by some "nameless twin coach" all i know is that he did a awesome job getting our prospects to play at their level, and if you look at where our guys have succeeded most (Crede,Borch,Rauch) it was under wally in AA. I congatulate him on getting a major league jon and only hope he doesnt come back to bite us in the ass.
Rex Hudler
which is the damn shame of the Gardenhire phone call thing - cuz Backman probably would have been a superb manager for us Wally has had the habit of talking too much, but I don't buy the s*** about him wanting the Sox to lose. He may have joked around with Gardenhire, but losing is not Wally's style. Lots of things can be taken out of context and I have no doubt this was one of them. It comes as no secret that I wanted LaRussa to come back to the Sox and thought Wally Backman's style would have been disaster with this team- he would have ran Sox out of innnings and Maggs, Lee and Jose's hamtrings into the ground by June, to say nothing of alienating half the veteran team we had back in September.. BUT I wanted ANYTHING over Ozzie, so I was suprised when they weren't talking about Wally B at all. i don't get this organization sometimes. Brando, I have no doubt that Wally could adapt his style of managing to the players he has. He played a certain style in Birmingham because he had teams with no power and quite frankly, average hitter overall. His lineup 1-9 was pretty weak, so he had to find ways to score runs. This past year he had some guys that were better at driving in runs, so the running slowed down. I think it is narrow-minded to think that most managers only know one style. Most of them are long-time baseball guys and adapt to the personnel they have. Some don't do it as well as others, however. As far as the veteran players not wanting to play for him, I don't think that would have been an issue at all. Wally is a very likable guy and players love playing for him. He and the players would have adapted an got along just fine. That said, I don't think he was the right choice for the Sox at this time because I don't think he would mix with KW. I do think he will make a good big league manager someday, however.
