Take it for what its worth (from the Score)

670 AM The Score just reported in their latest update that the Sox are again talking to L.A. about a possible deal involving Konerko. Offman went on to say the Sox want to sign Ponson but first have to move salary.

Nothing new, but I just find it interesting that Konerko talk is coming up again.

Thanks for posting this, I hadn't heard it.

This does not surprise me. It has been really quiet the past 2-3 weeks but that's normal as baseball basically shuts down for the two holiday weeks with agents, execs, players, on holiday.

Next week we'll begin to see things really pick up in terms of discussions, signings, etc. There are a ton of free agents out there.

Whether that will include the White Sox or not, who knows.

I still believe that either Konerko or Ordonez will be traded. It wouldn't shock me if they both went in the same deal, if it were the Dodgers.

They just stated the same thing again, but this time they added that the Sox are simply trying to get prospects for Konerko, not Odalis Perez.

They would then offer the cash saved to Ponson.

They keep saying this info is from White Sox sources, but who knows.

Atleast we can hope.

all this for a guy who has the following combined records for the past 5 yrs.

YEAR    W-L  ERA    IP

1999    12-12  4.71    210

2000    9-13    4.82    222

2001    5-10    4.94    138

2002    7-9      4.09    176

2003    17-12 3.75    216

COMBINED W-L 50-56 ERA 4.44

dare I say.. Todd Ritchie+ 30LBS

There is no way that Sidney Ponson could ever become as bad as Ritchie is now and as quickly as he became bad. The only way Ponson could blow up is with injuries. Otherwise, Ponson and Ritchie should not be compared.

LOL.. He's taller than 6' (Jim is 6' and he's at least 2 inches taller) and listed at 249 lbs. That's pretty ideal, and definitely not 30 lbs overweight. Even if he was 260 it would not be "overweight". Why don't you guys wait until you see him again before you bash him anymore. He's been on a pretty intense program since November 1st.

Konerko for Ponson and a prospect sounds like a good deal to me. Although keeping Konerko and signing Ponson sounds like a major league organization addresing their needs. After watching the hawks last eve I need to continue reminding myself that Chicago is a big city. Traffic this morning was all I needed to remind me.

FYI, the roof supports are going up although the braces for the upperdeck structure are kind of scary. I'd hate to see the entire upperdeck collapse.

Steff, who are you talking about? I assume Ponson and not Ritchie? Just wanted to make sure before I step in it.

I hope we don't trade Konerko for simply prospects. We trade an established star who hits for average and power, except for one medoicre year in '03, and we are ready to send him off for a package of minor league maybes. We don't have a good track record with LA anyway.

I am not sold on Ponson either. There is no positive consistency yet which would make me want to dish out $5M or $6M for him. If he signs for maybe $3M plus incentives then we should think about it.

I just heard it also about 10 mi ago. Good i hope this deal will go through, this will free up payroll not only for ponson but we will hopefully get some real good prospects and also we will have ponson for my guess 3 years, and have konerko and his 9 mil salary off the books for next year. The sox should have about 20 mil to spend next offseason if they don;t keep maggs and valentin. which they should lock up elo in the middle of the season if he is ass good as last year. Next years free agent outlook is supposed to be good. I just hope this works out for us.

I respect your opinion, but all I would really agree with here is that we should resign Esteban Loaiza.

Sidney is a FA.. can't trade for him.

Yes, talking about Sidney.

And I agree with your concerns.

there is no reason to be excited about anything really -

and I don't mean that negatively -

every year scores (or more, hundreds, who knows the exact proportions) of trades get discussed to every one that happens - this stuff gets talked about all the time -

SCORE needs something to report on an otherwise slow Monday -

I have no doubt people are talking but no point in any of us holding our breath - if it happens it does, if it doesn't it doesn't like so many other possibilities bandied about

if a deal is really going down, more likely than not it will not be public knowledge until it happens -

it wouldn't stun me if it happens or stun me if it didn't

i just cant get over the fact we let Bartolo Colon go. Oh well.. time to move on.

I can.

That lump of s*** is not worth $13 mill a year. Congrats to him on getting it, but he is not worth that much, no how, no way. He'd have to post the same type of numbers he did in 2002 to even be close to being worth $13 mill.

Ponson is Colon without the getting stronger part. And Ponson is younger too. I'd gladly take Ponson to replace Colon.

Excellent post.

Ponson could very well be a horse for us.

And hey, EVERY free agent pitcher is a gamble. Any major league pitcher's arm could go out at any time. There are very few freaks of nature like Clemons, Nolan Ryan, Maddux, etc. who pitch forever.

I'd be quite happy w/ Ponson. Every year we need that one big guy that will lower the mound a couple inches (Wells, Colon, who's next Sabathia?) Ponson seems to be a good inning eater, and we definitely could use something like that this year.

As for the Konerko deal, I'll believe it when I see it. I would like it to happen though.

I liked Colon alot, but I think the Angels over payed for him (purposely on their part) and Ponson would be a suitable replacement. The "innings eater" aspect is what I like best about him, even if last year was a complete mirage and he goes back to a 4.10-4.50 ERA at least he helps save the bullpen. I think every team needs 1 or 2 of these type pitchers, even if they're the 3 or 4th starter, and I think with Buehrle eating big innings adding Ponson could help an average bullpen by preventing overuse

I think this shows that Evans is startin to get really desperate, and he knows that he MUST make a move soon, whether it's for Maggs stoopin to KW's askin price or goin with Konerko.

The Dodgers were trying to get Konerko earlier, but passed when KW wouldn't give him up cheap enough. If they are re-visiting that trade for less than the Perez and Mota they looked at earlier, it certainly doesn't make me think Evans is getting desparate.
