"No big deals"...

Looks like the Sox are gonna go with what they have....

This is getting more discouraging every time someone new announces that they're not going to do anything.

Typical - the White Sox are sellers in a buyer's market.....ugh....

I wouldnt have a problem with that if they'd pick up a fourth starter like Ponson to shore up the rotation a little. Right now IMO thats our only glaring weakness.

I guess the only "bright spot" is that let's think back to last year. We had Colon, Buehrle, and everyone thought Garland would have his breakout year to be the solid 3 starter. Who was gonna be 4 and 5? Out of nowhere, through a couple of mechanics changes, here comes Loiaza.

So, let's just hope that Garland has his breakout year THIS year, like Loiaza, and the 4 and 5 gets around 10 wins. That makes the Sox pretty competetive assuming Buehrle is an 18 gamer, Loiaza 15, Garland 15, and 10 out of your 4 and 5. You want your starters to win you 60 games and everyone else on the staff to get those 25-30 wins mid to late innings. If these things happen, the Sox are strong challengers.

I hold out that glimmer of hope that someone else will break out - NOBODY expected Loiaza and so maybe there's one more of those somewhere in the organization.

What I really don't get is that KW claims he doesn't want to make any deals that are stupid and would make the team weaker, but if the team is 4 mil over budget wouldn't any trade improve the situation as long as it gets the team under budget?

Not if he is allowed to stay over budget for the time being. Just because payroll is at a certain amount now, doesn't mean it will stay that way. Perhaps if the Sox are in the hunt, he can stand pat. If not, then he can dump salary to get back to where JR wants him to be and get prospects in the process to reload somewhat. It's a long season, so a lot of things can happen.

I don't know if anyone will agree with me, but this is the "make it or break it" season for Jon Garland.  If he hasn't "gotten it" after 5 years in the majors, and especially with Coop as his pitching coach, then he will NEVER get it.

I'm totally with you on that one. Its defenitely time for him to step up and have the big season everyones been expecting from him. We're gonna need it too from the looks of things. IMO a lot of our success this season is riding on his shoulders.

No pressure though.

I agree with you, but putting a lot of our eggs in the basket of Jon Garland makes me about as uncomfortable as a person who just crapped his pants with diarrhea on a long bus trip. When I say that, I mean that I'm really leery about making Jon Garland our "trump card" as to whether we have a good season or not. I would prefer that we didn't have to put that much hope in the arm of a kid who is still finding his confidence and faith in his ability to pitch.

He has the stuff - there's no argument about that. But he has the stuff PHYSICALLY. Until he gets the stuff MENTALLY, he's a huge question mark. Please, Lord, let this be the year that the light bulb goes off above his head. Please.

Here's a question:

What would make you angrier, The Sox don't make any moves and don't say that they aren't, or the Sox don't make any moves, but constantly remind you that they won't make any moves every couples days or so?

I think the Sox might be blowing a small smoke screen by constantly saying they aren't going to do anything. If you're not going to do anything, then you just don't! You just go on day to day and don't say anything. But by saying you're not going to do anything every week is to me just an attempt to build a false facade in other teams' eyes. You're trying to convince them by using sheer repetiton.

You WANT people to believe that by announcing it regularly. If Kenny wasn't going to do anything, then he wouldn't make a peep. But it's almost like he's just trying to give that impression.

"Well, we're not going to do anything. DID YOU HEAR ME?? I SAID WE'RE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING!" (When deep down, he will do something).

I think it's a leveraging position, which is fine if it works. Otherwise, Kenny will become the little boy who cried "wolf."

Rex,

I'm in advertising. I have to constantly think. What would the average person think about this product? What do we have to do to sell this to a new audience without alienating our established demographic? ETC. As you can guess, I'm constantly thinking. Even on vacation, I still try to sell things and try to come up with slogans and campaigns while driving in the rental car. It's frustrating to me and to Laura, but I am who I am. I'm sick and I need help.

As for thinking too much, I can't help it. I was blessed with a very active brain and a very active imagination - I won't b**** for one second about that. I'm blessed. And yes, I do think too much. That's my strength. :headbang:

As for Kenny, I still think he's putting up a smokescreen. Before it's all said and done, I think he pulls off another Colon for Biddle/Abbott deal. The guy is starting to mature and grow into the GM position, and I think he can fool more people today than he did 2 years ago. I think that Billy Beane's ripping of him in that book inspired Kenny like nothing else could have. Hey, he got us Alomar and Everett for pennies last year! Kenny is like a buzzard, and Dan Evans is like a dying animal in the desert. (And Evans IS dying - his job is hanging by a thread). Eventually, that animal will die, and Kenny will swoop in and pick that carcass to pieces.

We can always hope folks. But, I agree with Rex in that we are all trying to see a silver lining behind all of this talk and the reality is most likley Kenny is speaking the truth and we won't do anything. I am not against going into '04 with what we have, but a few additions like a reliable 4th or 5th starter would be good and an experienced middle reliever, but I am not sure we can even think about adding a Kenny Rogers at this point, or should we. I am still mystified and miffed at the talk from the Sox front office at the end on the season where we were being told every effort would be made to keep the likes of Colon, Everett, Alomar, et al, etc, etc, blah, blah and now they are ALL gone. Did Reinsdorf lead Kenny to believe he was going to open the vault only to pull the key away at the last moment? I think Jerry Reinsdorf owes the Sox and the Sox fans an explanation.

Hmm.....I'd go w/ none of the above...BUT I think if they're going to be honest...I'd go w/ the 2nd choice.

I think our bullpen is a very weak spot. We need a closer (I prefer Marte to be setup for 7th and 8th innings) and a setup man from the right side. So I would say we need 1 good starter and 1 closer and 1 setup man. I would prefer Schoeneweis to stay in pen as our 3rd LH out there, tho he might be a good swing man for 5th spot. We need to replace Gordon and Sullivan, and I do not think Koch will help.

Last year everyone thought Danny Wright would easily be a good 4th starter, he had just come off a 14 win season.

One more item, if we had Kenny Rogers or Schoeneweis as our 5th starter last year, we would have won the division. We got 4 wins in about 25 starts from our 5th starter last year (thanks to Stewart and Wright). That is unacceptable. 10 wins would have improved us 6 games.
