IndySoxFan
I was at barnes and nobles this week and I was looking up at this mural of pictures of famous authors with their names underneath. I recognized most of the names, could name a few books by about half the authors, and even knew what most of them looked like, twain, orwel, dickinson, etc. I realized that there are alot of amazing writers and amazing pieces of literature that I haven't ever picked up. So I'm on a quest to read some books. so far on my list, here's what I got, and please, add any that you think I should read. I'd love to discuss some of these eventually. note: some of these books aren't considered literary masterpieces, but I know will make me think....maybe even you. currently reading: Borg- The Heart of Christianity Steinbeck- Of Mice and Men Chapman- 5 Love Languages Kafka- The Metamorphosis Arterburn, et al- Every Man's Battle currently queued: Franken- Lies and the Liars who tell them Coulter- Treason Nabakov- Lolita Joyce- Ulysses Vonnegut- Slaughter House Five (considering I've read every other book by him, but his most popular one...) London- White Fang Melville- Moby Dick Piper-The Dangerous Duty of Delight Borg- Two Visions good god..... if you can get through moby dick.... that has got to be the worst book on your list

Steff
I ripped through Moneyball in one night... of course I stayed up until like 3am reading it, but it was worth it. Good. I'm looking forward to it. I literally just started it.. page 30 or so. I have a friend who works at Borders and she gets damaged books for free.. and there are always some damaged.. so I have a ton of books with torn covers, or dented shells. Steff
That is the coolest thing I have ever heard!!!! Does she need any more friends??? Ya know.. I would imagine that some of them actually have a discount for damaged books. They don't advertise it, because of course they want to get full price, but I bet if you asked they would have some. Books are marked up in excess of 50%.. they make their money selling 1 in 5.

I need to make friends with someone at borders... I had a friend who worked in the Music depeartment before, needless to say my CD collection increased dramatically during his time there. He didn't last long. Got fired for stealing.

Gene Honda Civic
I was just reading The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2003. There's plenty of quality reads in there, taken from various periodicals and internet sites. There's quite alot of selections that would make good "required" reading for you HS kids. IlliniBob72
I usually just read history books, Civil War mainly. Bruce Catton is an excellent author, not dry and is easy to read. For a great historical novel, read Gore Vidal's Lincoln. My favorite fiction books were Of Mice and Men, Wuthering Heights, Anthem by Ayn Rand, and The Daughter of Time by Josephine Fey. For the life of me, I can't figure out how Mark Twain is/was so popular. I could never finish Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn.
mreye
Meh too many classics for my taste. Currently reading... "The Gospel of St Thomas" next in line "The case for Christ" "America's Game" "Hoosier Hysteria Roadbook" "The Decline and Fall of Practically Everbody" "World Religions" "The Great Pyramid" The Case for Christ is awesome! You'll enjoy it! I'm currently reading "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Catholicism." (I got it for my Confirmation, and I've learned 1000X more from it than I did in RCIA.)
