ESPN's best-kept secrets

CHICAGO:

Kelly Wunsch, LHP.

After injury-plagued seasons in 2001 and 2002, Wunsch regained his health and form in 2003. Wunsch pitched in 42 games and held opponents to a paltry .139 batting average while averaging nearly a strikeout per inning. Now that Tom Gordon has gone and Billy Koch may follow him, look for the White Sox to give Wunsch a bigger bullpen role in 2004

I've always liked Kelly. Hopefully he can stay healthy and pitch well next season in what will probably be his biggest role to date.

Sounds pretty simple to me.  He'll pitch more innings.

Maybe we will get away from too much tinkering and strategizing, second guessing, left/righty statistics and just play good hard nosed baseball. Kelly Wunsch should be able to log more innings and be successful. I never have bought into to the idea that everytime you have a righty or lefty hitter you must counter with the proper reliever. Stay with who is hot and go for it. If Kelly Wunsch starts and inning and faces a lefty hitter and gets him out but the next guy is a righty I say stay with Wunsch. Everything has been so computerized it takes away the real feel for the game IMHO.

I read the while article, and they had Kyle Farnsworth on there too. He seems overrated to me, atleast in Chicagoland. Every Cubs fan go on and on about him, and he finds a way to f*** up...great he has the body of a stud pitcher and can hit 100 mph, but I do not think he will ever put everything together.

id take him

I didn't say I wouldn't...I am just saying he isn't so much of a secret like the rest of the guys on the list. Borowski is less hyped than Kyle and Borowski is their closer. Damaso Marte should be on that list, Farnsworth is more hyped than Marte too.

I agree to a certain extent. I'm not so much for making changes based on righty/lefty matchups, but I am for knowing how a pitcher fares against certain hitters and would make changes based on that. So, computers and info management does has it's place in baseball.

Bravo! I couldn't agree more. Some of the greatest managers of all time were "hunch" players. They didn't have or need computer printouts to guide them.
