Anyone here planning on going to Sox Spring Training?

I think this year I am going to give in and go.

If you have been, how have your experiences in Arizona been.

I haven't been to Spring Training since the Sox were in Florida.

I went 11 years in a row with last year being my first year missed due to moving. I'm not planning on going this year due to an increase in my job responsibilities. I had a great time every time I went. It's what you make it. If you decide to go, make sure you have a plan on things you want to do. Otherwise you might miss something.

Steff is right, it is a great time. I have gone for the last 5 years as my dad lives in the Phoenix area now and we drive down to Tucson for 3-4 days.

Here are some suggestions:

The Sox games don't sell out and you can get tickets on a walk up basis, but if you want to sit close to the Sox dugout, get tickets in advance. They're on sale this weekend.

There are plenty of budget choices for hotels in Tucson, you can check them out at visittucson.com , you'll have plenty of choices. There is a Holiday Inn on Palo Verde, near the ballpark, which has a spring special going on. I've not stayed there but it's nice from what I hear.

Tucson is a vibrant, fun city with plenty of choices for food and entertainment. You don't have to spend a lot on food, they have great local Mexican places and there are quite a few Italian sandwich/pizza joints too. Lots of transplanted midwesterners and easterners so there are several Chicago style places.

Old Tucson is a great attraction to visit, it's where many of the old westerns were filmed, and tv shows, and several John Wayne movies. Great for kids and adults alike. The Davis-Monahan Air Force base has a tour as does the Pima Air Missile grounds, if that's your thing. There's a really nice entertainment area very near the University of Arizona called 4th Avenue, lots of interesting stores, bars, restaurants. If you like nightlife, check out Maloney's, The Shanty, and O'Malleys.

We are staying out on the east side this year, on Speedway. That's where they have what they call "restaurant row" ... not all chain places, lots of interesting local choices.

There is a brewpub right near the university called Gentle Ben's, in fact it's on University Ave. Great place, nice people, good beer. And the Tap Room at the historic Congress Hotel, a funky place near the downtown core of Tucson. The Congress Hotel is where John Dillinger stayed just before his demise, in 1934. The Congress Hotel has a great place for breakfast called the Cup Cafe ... great food, cheap.

We never fly direct to Tucson, we go out to Phoenix and drive down. The Sox always play some games in the Phoenix area so we time our trip to ensure we see them play in Tempe, Scottsdale, Mesa, etc. as well as Tucson. Phoenix, and its attractions, are a whole other thread.

You should definitely plan out your agenda. The games are all at 1:05 local time, there is only one night game this year in Tucson, I will be there, on March 10th.

You can do a little sightseeing in the morning, grab a quick bit, and get to the ballpark by 12:30 or so. It is also fun to spend a morning on some of the other ball fields near Tucson Electric Park to see some of the young prospects work out or play an intrasquad game. All those areas are open to the public, you just have to nose your way around.

Have a great time! I highly recommend it.

Seriously?  Damn I would say ST everytime.  At least that way you get sun, heat and baseball.

I've been to spring training twice before when I was younger.

Never been to Soxfest, so I'd like to see what it's like.

Has anyone heard anymore about the rumor over the demise of the 7 game plan?  That is what i used to always get, so that is what I would do again.

This is the first I have heard of it. The forms usually would go up at whitesox.com in Feb or March.

I hope they are still offering it. That is what I get as well.

Ah I gotcha.  That makes a little more sense.  What did you think of ST?  Was it in AZ or FL?

It was in FL when I was a lot younger. During Frank's MVP type years, 93 and 94 I believe. At that time I was all about the Big Hurt. Even got him to sign my Sox cap before losing it on the plane ride home. (Imagine the heartbreak). Anyhow, my Uncle used to live down in the FT Lauderdale area and the Yankees were training there. Anyhow, I saw the Sox and Yanks several times and it was a great thrill for me at the time. Never been out to Arizona, but I'd like to go in the next few seasons.

JD, its a real blast. I think I've went for the past 6 or 7 years. Its my dad and I's father-son trip. Arizona is really nice. We usually stay down in the Tempe/Phoenix/Scottsdale area and drive up to Tuscon and catch a few Sox games, but we also check out some other games when we are there and at least one Angel game.

The stadiums are nice, you get to watch bp (Which is one of my favorite things to watch) and you get to see a lot of the younger players, which I think is really cool. If your into autographs, you can easily pick up quite a few of them and the atmosphere is just really relaxing. And at night, Arizona is really nice, the weather is great during March and there are plenty of good places to get food, hang out and do whatever else.

Its a whole lot of fun.
