Sox will deal at break, whether for good or bad

I would really like to see the Sox go after Kris Benson at the break from the Pirates. He is a free agent after 2005 and I think we would have a reasonable shot at resigning when we get some salary relief next year. He generally post good numbers and I am confident the Pirates would do it because they would be out of it and they have no shot at resigning him.

I am glad not see Nomar at short for us for three reasons: He didn't want to be here, we wouldn't have traded him for pitching and I would rather sign a guy like Christian Guzman in 2005, who would come $10 million cheaper and post very solid numbers and a great defense.

2003 Season

Early on in the year, Kris Benson appeared on his way to finally fulfilling his vast potential. After missing 2001 because of reconstructive elbow surgery, he followed up a 9-2 finish to the 2002 campaign by going 3-3 with a 2.90 ERA in his first six starts of '03. However, his season began to unravel after that. He felt pain in his shoulder and missed a start in June before being shut down for good one game after the All-Star break.

Hardly a guy I'd count on next season or would want to trade for.

You know what Kris Benson has had his share of injuries and that can not be denied at the same time he is a good pitcher who would easily slide into the thrid or fourth slot in our rotation. One thing that does concern me with Benson beside his Injury cocerns is his heart and his willingness to play through some pain. That being said if we could get him for next to nothing which is very possible since the Pirates seem to have given up on him I would like to see him added to the mix.

Let's also remember the Todd Ritchie trade. We gave up a lot for a pitcher that was well....It's not really appropriate to say here. Anyhow, I don't see the Pirates giving up Benson up for next to nothing but I could be wrong. And if they do, his salary will be enough for the Sox not to want him beyond next season. I believe he made around 4.3 million last year. That's a lot for a guy that's never really proven anything at the major league level.

Just found this from ESPN, they had this on Friday on Benson:

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Kris Benson threw off a mound Friday for the first time since July, then pronounced himself healed from the shoulder injury that cut short his 2003 season.

"I'm 100 percent, no doubt about it," Benson said.

Benson, the Pirates' opening day starter last season, threw 30 fastballs -- the same workload as the other pitchers attending the team's annual January minicamp.

"My shoulder felt great," Benson said. "I didn't have any type of problems at all. I felt strong enough to keep going. I was throwing nice and easy and the ball was coming out easily. I couldn't have asked for more for my first time off the mound."

Maggsmaggs, I love Cristian Guzman.

Hopefully next off-season we'll either land him or Orlando Cabrera, they're both free agents if I'm not mistaken. ( I know it's pathetic, I'm already talking about who we should sign next off-season!! :bang )

Assuming the Pirates are out at the All-star break.
