Overlooked 5th Starter

Joe Cowley of Daily Southtown reports Chicago White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper is excited about the addition of Rule 5 addition P Jason Grilli (Marlins). "I want him to step up and say, 'Hey, you have to start me.' He just sounds real hungry to me and that's what we need," said Cooper. Grilli went 10-4 with a 3.05 ERA in 19 combined starts in 2003 between Class A Jupiter and Triple A with the Florida Marlins organization.

I like Diaz as well, but his stamina has been questioned do to his lack of innings pitched throughout the minors and winter ball. Maybe would serve better as a long reliever, give Wright some competition to see how he steps up. Coop is a real smart guy, and once he decides, I'll be confident that it is the best decision with who we have.

I'd heard Cooper talking on the radio about Grilli as well.

He's got a little more experience than some of the others, that'd be a plus.

I thought maybe they had in mind for the long relief role, but it'll have to play out in Tucson. I hope I get to see him pitch when I'm there.

That could fit too. Regardless if it's him or someone else like Diaz who takes it, I wonder what happens to Wright? He did serve that role well, as opposed to his starting role. Maybe trade bait, or maybe he's the guy? We'll have to see. I'm going to be in Phoenix, so I will be watching some of thier away games. I'm trying to make it happen so that I will out there March 13, when they play the Cubs. That would be pretty cool. They also play Oakland later in the week.

Seal, if you're going to that 3/13 game I would get tix as soon as possible. It will sell out, especially since it's a Saturday game, it's vs. the Sox, and the Cubbie Kool Aid is flowing freely in Mesa right now. My dad lives the next town over and it is driving him crazy. Every time he meets someone and they find out he's from Chicago, they always say, "oh you must be so excited about the Cubs". His response never seems to lead toward pleasant dinner conversation.

Lol your dad sounds alright. Ya I probably won't get tickets to that one. I have buddies that live out there so I'll ask them about it, but I can't be sure right now I'll be there then. They're going on vacation for Spring Break, and I think it's during then, so I'd I'll probably end up going there after they get back. Kind of sucks, but they still play a couple other games in the area. I'll probably go to a couple Giants games as well, not that I'm a fan, but we can get in for free. We know someone who works with the video taping with the club, got us in before and drank for free. Fun time, and pretty nice facility. I'd rather see them in Tucson, have fun out there. I went to ASU, and we made our way out there as well, it's pretty cool.

Good question on what will become of Wright. I am not sure the Sox management has really had much to say about danny. Trade bait is a possibility or he could be the long relief answer, which I guess they did mention last year. After being 0-7 as a starter it does mean it's his time to step up. There will be lots of competition for that 5th starter role and I am not so sure that Schoenenweis is the answer at the #4 spot either. We will see in the Spring I guess.

I'm skeptical of Scotty as well. However, KW has said he's been trying to get this guy for three years now. Also, he's added a cut fastball that made Loaiza more effective. Scott is very good against lefties, but struggled against righties. They believe this cut fastball will be an effective pitch against righties. I hope that works, we'll just have to see.

I'd like to see Cotts in the 4th starter slot because we might as well let him get some experience rather than just trot Schoeneweis out there to pitch 200 innings with a 5.50 ERA.

Unfortunately that could be Cotts too. I think I have more confidence in Scott. I would rather not rush Neal, do to his potential and what happened to him last year. If he has an outstanding ST, then I'd change my mind, but otherwise another year of development is probably best to work on his control.

I agree. I'd love to see Neal on the mound on a regular basis..

Pretty interesting as far as the competition for those spots. We have just named a few and there are more waiting for Spring Training: Rausch, who I like and still think he should have been called up last season rather than Panaigua. I just have to wonder how things may have turned out if Manuel hadn't pitched Cotts in place of Buerhle in NY and Loaiza when he was sick and using Panny in relief to dang near blow that game against the Twinkies. Rausch had picthed well at the end on 2002 against the twinks. I think Neal Cotts had his confidence rattled against the Yankees, but could make an impact in '04.

what ever happened to corwin malone??...i saw him pitch once against the giants in spring training like 3 years ago and he looked like he could throw 4 pitches for strikes...now he is still in double A

rex..you probably saw him last year...any chance this kid could reserrect his career???....he was part of that '01 number one farm system class of KW's and he was suppose to be ready this year

Corwin Malone has had a very tough time with his mechanics and also with a tender elbow. Rex has stated that he thinks most of Malone's problems are between the ears.

His control has been bad. They sent him down to Bristol where he made a few starts and I recall from looking at stats he was more effective.

There may be hope for him yet, he is only 23, but he is nowhere near ready by all acccounts.
