Sox perk up for Takatsu

The White Sox are going the extra mile to ensure that Shingo Takatsu, the team's first Japanese-born player, feels welcome. His contract is loaded with perks similar to those of other Japanese players in the U.S.

Each year the Sox will pay up to $50,000 for an interpreter, $25,000 for a housing allowance and provide six round-trip business-class tickets from Tokyo to Chicago, so Takatsu's wife and two kids can visit twice.

He also gets a full no-trade clause in 2004 and if the Sox pick up his 2005 option at $2.5 million, he can veto trades to 10 clubs. The veteran reliever can also earn bonuses above his $750,000 salary—$250,000 if he appears in 65 games as a setup man or $500,000 if he finishes 60 games as the closer.

Wow.  I wonder if anyone else on the team has any of those type of extras.  First class plane tickets?  Interpreters?  No trade clauses?

When you have nogotiations with individuals, and put them in a team environment, discrepency happens. The players all know this and know it's a business situation. I don't anticipate any "chemistry" problems because of this.

It's not so uncommon. Kevin Brown made the Yankees spring for 6 first round trip tickets from LA to New York for his family, in order to approve the trade. They obviously obliged.

IIRC.. they gave him use of the team plane, not just tickets.

I don't have any problems with incentives in contracts especially Shingo's, but just to make an observation: When a player makes a million dollars plus a year what is the big deal in expecting the team to buy airline tickets for your family? Maybe when I negotiate with me boss next year I will request plane tickets, hotel rooms, etc, to Chicago to watch the White Sox. Maybe I will even request paid time off. It would do wonders for my productivity. :D
