No. 5 slot

Hey guys, I was wondering what you all here at soxtalk.com thought of Jon Rauch being a canidate for the 2004 White Sox Number 5 slot. I think he'll break out and be a commander of his control in his pitches, just like Prior, or maybe I'm just smoking the crack pipe, but I wanted to know your opinions on him, especially from the "highly touted posters" like Horlen, Hudler and Quickman.

Crack pipe. Yep, that's it. I can't see him being our fifth starter. He was supposed to be there two years ago. It didn't work out. I think he has to impress at ST, just like everyone else does. It is wide open. I hope that we can acquire a fourth starter before the season, and use Schoewenweis as the fifth starter.

Who's Horlen?

You are smoking crack if you are going to mention him in the same breath as Prior. But very few pitchers would belong in the same sentence as Prior.

Personally, I am not high on Jon. I haven't seen him pitch in three years, so I could be wrong, but I never saw what everyone else did when he had his huge year in 2000. I felt like he could be a big league starter, just not a #1 or #2 like many others did. It has been well documented on here, so I won't go into it all, but I question his attitude and approach.

That said, I could certainly see him putting things together enough to win the #5 spot. He definitely has talent. I just don't think he will ever be dominant. On the flip side, he could be a career AAA pitcher too. Going into ST, I would think he has as good a shot as any of the other candidates to win that slot.

At this point, IMO, Jon Rauch is Scott Ruffcorn/Larry Thomas. All show and no go. A lot of hype and promise - not a lot of results or major-league wins. Try offering him to any other major league team and see what you would get in return. That's about as good of a measuring stick as anything.

He's what? 6'-10"? The hell with his fading baseball career - he should go to the West side of town and sign with the Bulls. They need a big man more than the Sox do. :bang
