LDF
http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/rogers_phil...il/1496899.html i am not too sure but what i wanted to point out is, even tho we have a great pen in the making with colon. i think minn is a little better. didn't they win the central without 1 or 2 of their key starters? witesoxfan
They got lucky as hell and their bullpen was way overworked...their starters won't be as durable and their rotation will have to pay the price because of it, and some pitchers won't perform as well as they did last year....I bet Romero doesn't put up a 1.89 ERA and Hawkins a 2.13 ERA(epecially considering the year he had in 2001....a 5.97 ERA and a WHIP of near 2.00 and Romero had a 7.02 ERA as a starter in 2000 and a 6.23 ERA in 2001)....Tony Fiore can't be expected to repeat his great year that he had....Johan Santana should be made a starter, but they have 5 starters already....so he'll be in the pen. The way the Twins pen collapsed last year in the playoffs is not quite how bad it will be this year....in fact, it's not even close. But it won't be quite THAT good this year as it was last year. Our pen will be fresh next year, assuming one or more of our starters don't go down with injuries.
DonkeyKongerko
I do not expect Guardado to perform at the levels of 2002. However we can probably expect more of the same from the likes of Romero and Santana. LaTroy Hawkins is somewhat of an enigma to me. I still don't see consistency out of him and think 2002 could have been one of his "career" years.

He got lucky as hell as the year went on....it looked like he could get lit up on any night. He is a closer with power pitches but not power stuff. He has a 92-94 MPH fastball at most, a decent curve, and a decent changeup, and maybe a slider(you know....the same curve, change, and slider that Koch has )....he drops down his arm angle every once in a while to mess up the hitter....but he's not that good of a closer. I could definitely see him not performing the way he did last year...in fact, it's almost a given. He may have to go back down to his middle relief job this year and give way to Romero as closer. baggio202
id be shocked if minnesota's pen repeats last years performance..plus they are jerking around eddie gaurdado the way KW is mark buehrle...buehrle handled it nicely last year..will gaurdado do the same???...they had so many below average journeyman pitchers step up with huge seasons...the odds of all of them not regressing some are astronomical...shoring up a bullpen is the easiest thing to do in baseball...there are always a bunch of good quality relievers to be had for a nickle and dime (relaltively speaking) through free agency...i think minnesota will be kicking themselves in the ass for not making some moves...plus they already start out behind last year since mike jackson is a free agent...they have to replace him
witesoxfan
I think we should sign Mike Jackson to a minor league deal...and then use either him or Almonte as a reliever for when one of our relievers goes on the DL....Mike Jackson knows so much about relief pitching it is insane, and could share that wealth to our pitchers(I think he was a major reason the Twins had success in the pen last year) and he would also tell us things about the Twins pen and pitchers as a whole...like what they throw, where they like to throw it, how they like to throw it, how they like to throw against our hitters...etc. And I'm sure we could get him for that minor league deal or $500,000...I think that'd be the best $500,000 KW ever spent. witesoxfan
Mike Jackson's a righty...and the Twins are trying to balance out their lineup anyways....which was a major reason they got rid of David Ortiz. They will use Matt LeCroy as their everyday DH for this year...and he's a pretty good hitter...and he can play catcher. How many damn catchers do the Twins have that are good hitters? Pierzynski, LeCroy, Mauer in the minors, and they just traded Javy Valentin away to Milwaukee and he hit 20 homers in the minors....sheesh. I remember hearing on Baseball tonight a couple times how the Twins pitchers said what a leader he was. I also think stats showed that when Jackson leaves a bullpen, it gets way worse and when he hits a new bullpen it gets way better. I know stats are weird, but it was like 4 times in a row he helped a bullpen go from one of the worse to best and when he left it regressed quite a bit. Also...Eddie Guardado isn't that good and it isn't like he's a young player coming into his own. Of course Romero is damn good and Hawkins has whicked stuff, but he hasn't exactly proven consistency. No way are they as good as last year. There rotation is real good though. Lohse improved, while Radke should be healthy as well as Mays. witesoxfan
That's Javy Valentin....Jose's brother...and he's just like his brother in a sense, as both have real good arms....Javy is bigger than Jose though, and that's probably a big reason he is a catcher....got traded to the Brewers along with Matt Kinney for a couple minor leaguers. I'd take Javy Valentin as a 3rd catcher, and then having the Valentin brothers on the team could create a good aura in the clubhouse....not only that, but then we could get rid of Josh Paul....so as soon as Alomar went down, we could bring up Valentin and be a good backup. witesoxfan
I figure it is...or else he wouldn't be a catcher. Besides, not only would he be a good backup, but it makes the bench deeper, because as I said, he did hit 20 homers in AAA for the Twins. Its too bad they would never trade within the division or at least not with the Sox.

YASNY
At this point in time, there are 17 replies to this post and not one reference to Phil Rogers' article. It's amazing how things can go off on a tangent in here.
