upnorthsox
I'm positive it is true, UNS. Options are based on being on the 40-man roster, not the 25. You missed my point Rex, the option period is one yr in length. I believe that yr starts/ends at the beginning of each season(when the 25 man roster is submitted). Of course you have to be removed from the 25 man roster for an option to be used(That I am positive about) so I guess you would have to be on the 25 man at some point and thus on the 40 man. Is it me or was that not in English, UNS? Any player that is on the Sox 40-man roster that does not make the Sox 25-man roster at the beginning of the season is optioned to the Minor Leagues. An option is burned whether that player plays in the Majors that year or not. So yes, you are correct that the option period begins at the end of ST when rosters are set. The rest of what you said when right over my head.

Like I said at the beginning, I could be wrong. Obviously you're not.
Chisoxfn
For anyone that knows, is there any chance they would give Sweeney a chance to pitch? The Sox liked him a ton as an outfielder. I know at least a few organizations that liked him as a pitcher. Hopefully he excells as a hitter cause the only way I could see him moving him to pitching is if he failed as a hitter/outfielder. Kind of like the whole Dellaero pitching experiment after he could never hit for an average despite being a fantastic defensive shortstop. Chisoxfn
I would say they are in the bottom 3rd in terms of prospects because they don't appear to have a lot of guys who are going to make an impact in the immediate future besides Reed, Honel and maybe Cotts. I think in a year as some of the guys make names for themselves, you will see the Sox prospect rating climb quite a bit, slowly back into the top 10, imo. Especially if guys like Haigwood and Rodriguez are back at 100%.
Rex Hudler
So option have NOTHING to do with the 25 man roster, glad to hear it. Like I said at the beginning, I could be wrong. Obviously you're not. The 40-man roster is the Major League roster. Those contracts are MLB contracts with MLB privileges. The option rules are based on who is on the 40-man, so the active 25-man roster has to do with options only in that if you don't stay on the 25-man roster you earn one of those options going back to the minors. And as was said earlier, they are option years, so a player can be promoted and sent to the Minors as many times as necessary within a given season and only one option is used. BillSharp
Jeez, Rex is the only guy who understands options. Options begin once you're put on the 40 roster. After you're on the 40 roster if you're optioned to the minors one option is used. Only one option is used a year no matter how many times a guy is brought up during a year. Rauch, 99 draftee - on 40 November 01. Optioned to minors in 02 & 03. Should be 1 option left. In April of 05 he will have no options left.
