C.Rector
There has been a lot of anger directed at the White Sox on this board because the team has not opted for huge increases in payroll. Many of the posters on this forum have expressed the near-religious conviction that raising the payroll will increase both the quality of the team and its chances in 2004. There has also been a certain amount of optimism on this forum concerning the Cleveland Indians and their chances for winning the AL Central in 2004 and in the years beyond. However, during the current offseason, there have not been any moves on the free agent scene by the Indians and their payroll will continue to be significantly lower than that of the Sox. Question: If increasing the payroll magically improves a team, then why the optimistic forecasts for the low-payroll Indians?

Cleveland disassembled what was once a World Series caliber team that was on its way down, and went to a youth movement that is beginning to pay off for them. They came within one out of winning it all in '97. Their fans have a t least seen the team in a WS. Sox fans, on the other hand, haven't sniffed a WS since 1959 and would not stand for another youth movement. This team is close to being a legitimate WS contender by adding one or two key players, and the fans are upset because that hasn't been done. It has little to do with dumping a ton of cash, it has everything to do with putting out a rotation that can win. If that takes adding payroll this yr then so be it. next yr the payroll will be down about $30 mil, if they are fielding a team that can win it all then so be it too. Btw, Cleveland was in 2 WS. How do you know that it hasn't been done? There were 4 playes such as Francisco Campos and Jason Grilli picked up in the Rule V Draft and there have been other players signed to minor league contracts. There will be a competition among 15-20 pitchers for about 4 or so spots in the starting pitching staff. What makes you think that none of them will be able to make the grade? Remember: At this point in time last year, practically nobody was predicting that great things would come from the signings of Esteban Loaiza and Tom Gordon. KW has access to scouting reports and film/video that none of us have access to.
DBAHO
Cleveland will be big time challenges in 2 years, mayb even next year. When guys like Phillips, Sizemore and Cliff Lee get comfortable and can contribute at the Major League Level, that team is goin to be very, very dangerous. Their farm system would easily be in top 3, mayb even da best in da league.

Let's say the signing of a Sid Ponson or Greg Maddux would go a long way toward making me feel that we were that much closer.
upnorthsox
Too funny!!!! The 2 best things to happen for Sox fans last season are now the 2 biggest things being used against us. First the Cubs losing, and to think I thought it would be bad for the Sox if they lost. Now the Marlins are being held up as the excuse for cheapness, man if I'd a known I'd have been crying instead of LMFAO. Second Loaiza winning 20, now we're getting the excuse that a 20 gamer can be found every yr by dredging the scum on the bottom of the FA pond. Well that's Sox fans luck I guess, no wonder it's all our fault.
