Gammons changed his mind, now thinks...

He says that the Dodgers will get Greg Maddux, then they will trade a pitcher (Perez) for a proven hitter (Thomas), I like especially if we get Jackson or Miller. This is interesting because Gammons has thought all along that the Cubs will get him, now he doesn't. His basis is that Boras and Hendry hadn't talked in 2 or 3 days.

Where is this from? A story or an appearance on SC?

Jim Hendry has got to be the most overrated GM in all of MLB.

Although, having said that, I don't think that Maddux ever really wanted to finish up in Chicago after the way that the Cubs treated him when he was there and also the fact that they are offering him less money than what they will be paying the mediocre Kerry Wood. In baseball player talk, the Cubs are "disrespecting" Maddux.

If the "dustiny" of the Cubs pitching staff is serious injuries this season, then the Cubs could wind up contesting Pittsburgh for 4th place. That's the reason why the Cubs really need the services of a pitcher who hasn't been screwed around with by Dusty Baker the pitcher torturer. That and to be able to keep the worthless Juan Cruz out of the starting rotation.

So if Gammons thinks the Dodgers are getting him, I guess this means the Mets are? ;)

I was thinking the same thing. If Gammons thinks he is going to the Dodgers then he most likely is signing with the Cub or the Giants.

As for the Perez/Thomas trade, what do you think the Sox should be asking for? What kind of prospects etc.?

I don't mind the trade of Thomas as long as we get either Miller or Jackson and Mota, along with Perez.

The rumor is that it would Perez for Thomas straight up. I don't believe that will happen. KW shot down a proposal of Thomas for Weaver, and said he wouldn't listen to overtures that insult what Thomas has done. Realistically, and I'm not even sure the Dodgers would do it, because they love thier prospects, it would probably have to at least be a Perez and Miller for Thomas. :drink

Many times when trade rumors first start to circulate, the principals in the trade are the only ones mentioned and prospects or throw-ins are added later. Just because a rumor begins as Thomas for Perez, doesn't mean it will likely end up that way........... IF it ends up happening at all.

For what it's worth WSCR is saying Boras and Hendry spoke yesterday and are scheduled to speak later in the week.... and ESPN 1000 is also saying they talked but no offer was made, the Cubs may make a new offer later in the week but Hendry has to go to the Tribune brass to add money to any offer

I think what's happening is Boras is waiting for the Dodgers to clear their GM situation up so he can get a firm offer from them, then he can take solid numbers to the Cubs for a counter offer.... But if the Cubs offer 14-15m for 2 years I think Maddux will just sign with them with out getting any other firm offers

Or proven hitter(Konerko).

Thomas cannot play defense fulltime(mainly due to injury concerns), makes less then Konerko, is a better hitter then Konerko, and can actually take a walk now and then.

Thomas is about as proto-typical of a DH as you are going to get.

i dont think playing first base is much of a injury risk. he tore something diving for a ball that can happen to anyone, to keep frank off first base because he will hurt himself. is like saying we dont throw loriza because he might hurt himself.

Not quite. Loaiza has never been out for the year with an injury due to something he didn't need to do. Thomas did not need to dive...hell, odds are, Ichiro would have beaten it out anyways had he gotten it.

If Thomas got hurt hitting, then it would be comparable to any pitcher pitching. He does not need to field

Besides, him not being able to throw it to second or third is also a negative...atleast Konerko can throw the ball around a little.
