cwsox
everyone should do their part to serve this country...giving 2 years of your life to support this country is nothing compared to all the benifits we recieve living in a free society.... Right on my brother! Jason, I'm sorry to disagree with you, you know I respect the hell out of you for so many reasons. Just like for Mormons, you give your two years of service but only for your country and when it is over, school will still be there. We havent has the draft since it officially ended on 30 June 1973 if I am correct on the date. For 30 years we have raised citizens in the midst of much material abundance as we all sit at our computers and it is time that we start reminding people again that there is a price for this freedom and this country. Let no one say it isn't fair, it isn't just, they didn't plan for it - the people who died on11 September didn't want their lives interrupted and the innocent civilians and the members of the rank and file military in Iraq who will be killed, the conscripts, not there by choice, and they don't their lives interrupted either. Or to be killed so students and drink and get trashed and do drugs and get wasted and have sex and prepare for lucrative careers without interruption. Whatever encourages people to consider the cost and how thsoe on the other side might feel, I am for - God Bless America and 2 year compulsory service for everyone - maybe especially for those who go to universities that we pay for with our taxes so that can earn big money later in ours system, time to say thank you with universal service. With me Baggio? (And Bags, am I getting all sarcastic tonight?)

With me Baggio? (And Bags, am I getting all sarcastic tonight?) Good Post CW. I definately see your point. I think way too many people take things for granted. People forget all the things people had to go through to make our country as great as it is. Freedoms, I will definately fight for. I think it isn't such a bad idea to serve two years active, if its in an educational way as well. I'm all for going and gaining more experience, cause I think the military is an excellent way of doing that. Not everyone is meant to fight on the battfield, some are intelligence, some are pilots, etc. I was going to join the military after highschool, but in the end I just wanted to get through college as quick as I could. I believe people who don't vote can shut up (Unless you are under the voting age or for some reason can't vote). Otherwise, if you don't voice your opinion at the polls, I don't ever want to here your whining cause you haven't earned that right. The one big thing I have against the whole military issue and having to go in it, is that it forces people into doing things, and I think the right to chose what you want to do and who you want to be is one of the greatest things about this country. I'd hate to have to fight with people who don't want to.

I'd hate to have to fight with people who don't want to. Many countries require military service of all their men of at least two years. If I lived in one of these countries I would comply. The only problem is this country is so large militarily that this has not been necessary for many years. The peace-time military in this country is one of the most attractive job offers to many young men and women making their way through college. Our nation's recruitment process is the most fine-tuned in the world. Last year about 80,000 soldiers enlisted in active duty and another 28,000 joined up with the Reserve. The military in our country is becoming a profession. Profession means that people devote their lives to something and are far more qualified to handle their jobs than those who are freshly recruited. Many families make a living off the pay checks of military officers and live the military life. A war that required the US to institute the draft would have to be so large and encompassing that it would seem impossible in this post-Cold War era. LowerCaseRepublican
I found this @ the This Modern World web page run by cartoonist Tom Tomorrow. He used Lexis Nexus and found a transcript of the Not In Our Name episode. Let's have a fun look see at the end of it, shall we? Bill telling the guy to shut up and to have his mic cut? Sounds like Bill lost to me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I caught a bit of the O'Reilly Factor during dinner last night, during which Bill berated Jeremy Glick, a signatory of the Not in Our Name ad whose father died in the 9/11 attacks. I couldn't find a transcript on the Fox site, but happily, one came in over the transom (probably pulled off Lexis, so no link available). This is how Bill O'Reilly behaves when faced with genuine disagreement: O'REILLY: You are mouthing a far left position that is a marginal position in this society, which you're entitled to. GLICK: It's marginal -- right. O'REILLY: You're entitled to it, all right, but you're -- you see, even --I'm sure your beliefs are sincere, but what upsets me is I don't think your father would be approving of this. GLICK: Well, actually, my father thought that Bush's presidency was illegitimate. O'REILLY: Maybe he did, but... GLICK: I also didn't think that Bush... O'REILLY: ... I don't think he'd be equating this country as a terrorist nation as you are. GLICK: Well, I wasn't saying that it was necessarily like that. O'REILLY: Yes, you are. You signed... GLICK: What I'm saying is... O'REILLY: ... this, and that absolutely said that. GLICK: ... is that in -- six months before the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan, starting in the Carter administration and continuing and escalating while Bush's father was head of the CIA, we recruited a hundred thousand radical mujahadeens to combat a democratic government in Afghanistan, the Turaki government. O'REILLY: All right. I don't want to... GLICK: Maybe... O'REILLY: I don't want to debate world politics with you. GLICK: Well, why not? This is about world politics. O'REILLY: Because, No. 1, I don't really care what you think. GLICK: Well, OK. O'REILLY: You're -- I want to... GLICK: But you do care because you... O'REILLY: No, no. Look... GLICK: The reason why you care is because you evoke 9/11... O'REILLY: Here's why I care. GLICK: ... to rationalize... O'REILLY: Here's why I care... GLICK: Let me finish. You evoke 9/11 to rationalize everything from domestic plunder to imperialistic aggression worldwide. O'REILLY: OK. That's a bunch... GLICK: You evoke sympathy with the 9/11 families. O'REILLY: That's a bunch of crap. I've done more for the 9/11 families by their own admission -- I've done more for them than you will ever hope to do. GLICK: OK. O'REILLY: So you keep your mouth shut when you sit here exploiting those people. GLICK: Well, you're not representing me. You're not representing me. O'REILLY: And I'd never represent you. You know why? GLICK: Why? O'REILLY: Because you have a warped view of this world and a warped view of this country. GLICK: Well, explain that. Let me give you an example of a parallel... O'REILLY: No, I'm not going to debate this with you, all right. GLICK: Well, let me give you an example of parallel experience. On September 14... O'REILLY: No, no. Here's -- here's the... GLICK: On September 14... O'REILLY: Here's the record. GLICK: OK. O'REILLY: All right. You didn't support the action against Afghanistan to remove the Taliban. You were against it, OK. GLICK: Why would I want to brutalize and further punish the people in Afghanistan... O'REILLY: Who killed your father! GLICK: The people in Afghanistan... O'REILLY: Who killed your father. GLICK: ... didn't kill my father. O'REILLY: Sure they did. The al Qaeda people were trained there. GLICK: The al Qaeda people? What about the Afghan people? O'REILLY: See, I'm more angry about it than you are! GLICK: So what about George Bush? O'REILLY: What about George Bush? He had nothing to do with it. GLICK: The director -- senior as director of the CIA. O'REILLY: He had nothing to do with it. GLICK: So the people that trained a hundred thousand Mujahadeen who were... O'REILLY: Man, I hope your mom isn't watching this. GLICK: Well, I hope she is. O'REILLY: I hope your mother is not watching this because you -- that's it. I'm not going to say anymore. GLICK: OK. O'REILLY: In respect for your father... GLICK: On September 14, do you want to know what I'm doing? O'REILLY: Shut up! Shut up! GLICK: Oh, please don't tell me to shut up. O'REILLY: As respect -- as respect -- in respect for your father, who was a Port Authority worker, a fine American, who got killed unnecessarily by barbarians... GLICK: By radical extremists who were trained by this government... O'REILLY: Out of respect for him... GLICK: ... not the people of America. O'REILLY: ... I'm not going to... GLICK: ... The people of the ruling class, the small minority. O'REILLY: Cut his mic. I'm not going to dress you down anymore, out of respect for your father. We will be back in a moment with more of THE FACTOR. GLICK: That means we're done? O'REILLY: We're done. The last few seconds of that exchange were really something to watch. I don't think I've ever seen a shouting head actually tell his guest to "Shut up! Shut up!" or to tell his producer to "cut his mic." Chisoxfn
I'm sorry, maybe I don't understand the point of that interview, but that Glick guy comes off like the jackass imo. First off, anyone that is in favor of the taliban staying in control has to have a bit of a warped view, especially when you consider the way women are treated there, but secondly this guy isn't even upset about the fact that his dad died. He is denying the fact that Afghanistan harbored terrorist, namely the taliban and Osama Bin Laden.

SI1020
The guy was a complete and total arrogant jerk. If I had been in the twin towers on 9/11 and one of my kids carried on like that it would be a dishonor and a disgrace and they know it. As far as O'Reilly goes he has the "in your face" style that has become popular in this country. Hey, you like it in your movies and your music, why be offended by O'Reilly? His politics are more complicated than he is given credit for. I have seen him on more than one occasion tear the "religious right" a new ass. He came out unequivocally in favor of gays being allowed to adopt children. He defended that lame brain senator from the state of Washington Patty Murray when she made statements I considered vacuous at best and treasonous at worst. A few months ago we had some "spirited" political threads on this site. I tried to be civil, but at times it did get nasty. Consequently I cut back on my participation. What I said on another thread still goes, it's sterotyping to the max at times. My love of a debate is getting the better of me. Unless or until I decide to quit message boards then I'm going to throw my two cents in if I feel like it. Leo Durocher was right. Nice guys do finish last. And that guy on with O'Reilly was an immature narcissistic moron.
Mathew
I saw that interview on Micheal Moore's website, after I watched Bowling for Columbine, I liked the movie, but was surprized that Canada's gun murder numbers were so high, let alone the U.S. Anyhow about the interview, why be surprized, it seems like both those two have a personality that is meants to be shocking and bombastic so I figure both were quite pleased with the end result of the interview even though I had little or no content. Soxplosion
How old is this b****? Cuz I know his late father had a kid on the way but I didnt know he had an older kid. But whatever, I hope his mother saw this and kicked his ass. Who dishonors their father like that? Who supports the people who murdered their dad? Thats sick. Im not even going to say what Id do to this punk if I met him. This is disgusting.
Spiff
O'Reilly is a dirtbag. He told people to boycott Pepsi when they hired Ludacris, and then when other people boycotted Rush Limbaugh he called them anti-american, taking away Limbaugh's freedom of speech etc. This is after he cut the Glick kid's mic, taking away his freedom of speech. Regardless of what you think of Glick, O'Reilly is a hypocrite and not anyone to be trusted. http://www.takebackthemedia.com/

SI1020
http://www.calltoconscience.net/ You're a good and principled guy. I come here because I'm the only White Sox fan that I know of in Allegheny County Pennsylvania. I've never met you or anyone else on this board to my knowledge. If I was in a social gathering and we were playing Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit I'd definitely want you on my team. If we ever do meet I'll tell you why I left the left 30 years ago or so. I'm not a "knee jerk" (and hopefully not a plain old jerk ) anything. My voters card says "non-partisan" . I know these times must be tough for you, not agreeing with the politics of the Executive Branch and having a kid in harms way. Hopefully it will all over soon with your kid, Nuke and everybody elses kid home safe and the White Sox in a pennant race. Now I offer my cyberhand to you in cyberspace. I don't know what to say, you are very kind and your good words are reciprocated. I do tend to get very competitive at trival games by the way, I play on some national network (NTN) every day at lunch and in one series today ran a perfect score but then, for the 2nd day in a row, I blew one question in the other series and missed winning nationally - finished 4th, never have won that damn thing - for all the good it does - and everyone at the local bar hates my guts because I blow their scores out of the water every day, every week, every month - there have been people who have come in just to try and beat me and they haven't yet - I get really cut-throat at trivia stuff, not that it puts a damn dime in my pocket - if you ever go into a bar and see the name cwsox on a trivia contest scoreboard that is me - for Nuke, for my son, for everyone, I just wish the world could see better ways than violence than resolving things - it has never gotten us anywhere and won't solve any long term problems now, only fulfills a need to get someone - I have great problems with what is happening now and fear for what is to come. thank you again, when are you coming to Chicago for a tailgate and game? One reason I belong to these boards is to get my Sox fix taken care of, not many (not any) Sox fans out here and I have met some wonderful people, including baggio who is a great guy despite his silly politics which we never discuss anymore because we both believe what we believe but know that friendship is more important than debating points and as long as everyone is involved, what more can we ask even if we disagree - get yourself to Chicago this season!
