DEREK DUMMIES UP

TAMPA - Derek Jeter exited the Yankees' minor league complex and hopped in his bronze Hummer. The Yankee captain lowered his window to sign a few autographs, then pulled out of the parking lot.

His thoughts on Alex Rodriguez would have to wait one more day.

Despite rumblings that he might skip his workout yesterday, Jeter showed up at the Yankee facility in the early morning to partake in pre-spring training workouts. When he emerged from the clubhouse onto the field, he was greeted by a media contingent of approximately 20 members, all anxious to hear what the current Yankee shortstop had to say about the newest Yankee shortstop - er, third baseman.

But Jeter simply smiled at the media and conducted his workout under the hazy sky. He took batting practice with Gary Sheffield and Tony Clark, handled grounders in the infield (yes, at shortstop) and did some light running in the outfield.

When the players finished working out, however, a team spokesman informed the media that none of the Yankees would be available to speak because at that hour, the A-Rod trade had not yet been finalized. The presence of George Steinbrenner might have had something to do with that, as the spokesman's announcement came just shortly after The Boss stepped onto the premises, chatted with Sheffield, Bernie Williams and pitching guru Billy Connors and left.

Still, there was at least muted optimism among the Yankees who provided some quick insight about the trade that landed the game's best player in The Bronx.

Told that the Yanks had acquired a new player, Bernie Williams chuckled, knowing that this was not just your average transaction.

"I heard," he replied. "Pretty good."

"Awesome," Tom Gordon said, as he signed autographs for dozens of Yankee fans.

Then there was Gary Sheffield, who was asked whether A-Rod's arrival made the Yankees' new lineup - which now includes himself, Rodriguez, Jason Giambi, Jeter, Williams, Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui - the best he's ever been part of.

"Definitely," Sheffield said before cracking, "Not sure if I'm going to be in it, though."

Joe Torre also made a surprise appearance at the camp, stopping by the field to chat with several players before leaving to fly back to New York for today's A-Rod press conference. Jeter jetted off to New York as well, taking his thoughts on the game's biggest trade with him.

Valentin and Ordonez for Jeter??? Jeter is a Michigan guy. Then we trade Jeter to Boston for Nomar, Nixon and Lowe. Why would Boston do this you ask??? They have the disgruntled Yankee captain and will overpay.

Why would the Yankees do this??? Boston wants Ordonez after the season and I really don't see the ego's of two HOF shortstops playing nice together. Winning is one thing being the best shortstop ever is another.

I was mentioning this to Brian - how are they going to get those two to play nice?  Egos are gonna erupt sooner or later even if PayRod is at 3rd...

I have never heard a bad word said about Alex Rodriguez in the clubhouse, nor have I about Derick Jeter. I think they will be OK. It is a guy like Gary shefflied that I worry more about.

Well look at that.. we will have something in common with the Yanks this year...

"Folks.. welcome to the Frank/Ozzie and Derek/Alex ego show.. step right up.. see who's head can inflate the largest... Woah Alex.. watch the door there.. Oops.. Frank.. bend at the knees big guy..."

Oh come on.. you know there doesn't actually have to be some evidence of this crap... Some BS will be reported within days I bet.

Well this is my theory. With Jeter being in NY, if he was an asshole, the whole world would know it. The NY media would have torn him up by now. Then with ARod being the highest paid player in the game, it is pretty much the same idea, if he had stepped on someones toes, they would have been crying to the media and it would have been all over the place.

The absence of those kind of stories is telling IMO.

Michael Jordan was king asshole.. we didn't hear about it until after he was (kinda) out of the light.

I see it the other way.. the media is afraid of those guys. They are afraid to get kicked out of the clubhouse. They are afraid the fans will s*** on them if they s*** on their favorite player. Look at Kobe... and not even the rape charge.. how perfect did his life look..? Yet he was cheating all over the place. You think others didn't know about that? ;)

But even with MJ, there were plenty of ex-players who were telling stories about Mike running practices, and getting into peoples faces, and the like. It wasn't front page stuff, but it was out there.

The problem is is that A-Rod is a gold glove shortstop and could be one of the best players ever. Jeter as far as fielding goes is average (worst range rating in all of baseball for what that statis worth.) I would agree if it were Jeter moving but not A-Rod sooner or later IMHO, something will blow. Playing nice for the sake of winning I think will get old. Especially if the media gets involved. These guys reached this lever by working their butts off. Is A-Rod just goign to accept playing out of position becoming second fiddle. What happens if A-Rod doesn't make the transition to third as soomthly as expected?

Flash wanted way too much for his injury-prone services and the Yankees were stupid enough to oblige.  I'm glad that the Sox didn't waste that money on him.

Which will most definitely equate into a career year for him this year..

:headbang BINGO!!!! He hasn't put 2 good years back to back since his injury. And I highly doubt he will have a 2.72 ERA with 46 saves this season. He has had a nice career, but is not worth that much anymore. Plus didn't we receive some sort of draft pick compensation for him? Doe sanyone know where that pick lands?

There's a listing of draft picks over at Baseball America ... I believe they got two for Colon and two for Gordon. It's something like a 2nd round pick for each and a sandwich pick in between rounds as well.

The key of course, is drafting well and signing these draftees too.

Yeah, they need to do a LOT better job at developing players too.

Even Montreal, with all their limitations, seem to come up with impact player after impact player.

Our Dominican scouting is weak, weak, weak.

I believe our scouting in general is very weak. Hasn't that alway been the case under Reinsdorf?

You are correct JimH.

The Sox in total will have a 1st round pick, two sandwich picks and three second round picks in the upcoming draft.

Finding players that can play, yet are signable and will not try to break the bank will be important. Not signing several of these players would hurt in a big way. But we have to be realistic in that they will have to be judicious in who the draft to avoid that from happening.

I know this is the real world we are talking about, and money and ego are king, but I could swear that I have always heard that any rivalry between these guys was all media created, and that actually Jeter and A-Rod are actually very good friends. I could be way off, but I know that it comes about during All-Star time often, and they usually laugh about the media making a big deal about the "competition" between them.

Or am I wrong...again?

Just answered this question for someone on Futuresox yesterday.

The Sox will get the two compensatory picks (sandwich picks between the 1st and 2nd round) for the Gordon and Colon signing and will get both the Yankees and Angels 2nd round picks.
