Athletics 26, Angels 3

March 6, 2004

PHOENIX (AP) -- Bartolo Colon was pulled six batters into his Anaheim debut and the Oakland Athletics broke loose after he left, routing the Angels 26-3 Saturday.

Mike Rose hit a grand slam and drove in five runs. The A's homered six times and had 27 hits.

It was Oakland's highest-scoring spring training game since records were kept beginning in 1986. The A's scored 25 runs in an exhibition game against Seattle Mariners last year.

``Twenty-six runs -- I've never seen that kind of offensive display before,'' A's manager Ken Macha said.

Colon, signed to a $51 million, four-year contract as a free agent, walked Mark Kotsay to start the first inning and gave up a single to Billy McMillon.

Eric Chavez then hit a two-run double and Jermaine Dye walked. After Colon struck out Erubiel Durazo and got Scott Hatteberg to ground out, Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia made a change. Scioscia later said Colon just didn't have command.

The A's led 5-0 before scoring six runs in the fifth inning and eight more in sixth.

Mark Ellis, Nick Swisher, Jason Grabowski, Eric Byrnes and Graham Koonce also homered for Oakland. Nine players had two hits each for the Athletics, and Chavez drove in four runs.

Joe Blanton (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings in his first start of the spring.

Keep in mind that it's only spring training, but 6 batters? Yikes. Reminds me of the game he pitched after the ASB in the game that started at 10:00pm. He didn't have his command then, either.

Serves that free spending Anaheim owner Arte Moreno right for mindlessly throwing his money around on the likes of that apathetic, lazy fat tub of lard and on that Vlad character as well. Here's hoping that the Angels finish in last place.

According to the Angels "beat" reporter," Colon is 20 lbs heavier than last year, but the team doesn't worry about it because "the more weight he has, the more power he has in his pitches." When did a pitcher's weight become a measuring stick to their reading on a radar gun?

If that's the case, then have Buerhle gain 100 lbs and he'll be throwing in the low 100's. What a stupidass comment.

And he was 260 when he pitched for the Sox last year. Hell, he should go for the gold and pick up another 20 to be the 1st 300 pounder in MLB.

Are you being sarcastic or for real? I wish we had an owner that was free spending. The Angels are going to a powerful team this year. "that Vald Character" He is only one of the best OF in the game....

Originally, Reinsdorf was free-spending and wound up wasting a lot on the likes of Julio Cruz. Eventually, he learned the error of his ways and hired Larry Himes as GM to rebuild the Sox farm/scouting system. If Reinsdorf kept up his spending, Sox ticket prices would be a lot higher than they are now and you'd be complaining like crazy about how its so expensive to go to ball games. Remember, sports team owners who buy a team to take a vow of poverty exist only in fannish fantasies.
