More hockey madness

Recommended Posts

Todd Bertuzzi of the 'nucks totally suckered Steve Moore leaving him in a pool of blood on the ice and starting a wild brawl. Another couple of hundred penalty minutes handed out. I'm loving the way this hockey season is going. Where has all this nastiness been the last few years?

It's called Playoffs.

I'm sorry, but I find it to be embarrassing roller-derby crap.

As if the NHL wasn't already enough of a joke on the sports horizon, every "hockey highlight" lately is a goonfest.

I loved SlapShot as a movie, but as real life it kinda blows.

At this rate, no one's gonna miss the NHL when it's gone next year.

I will. I'll take brawls and cheap shots over the neutral zone trap any day of the week.

I'll take end-to-end rushes and good solid CLEAN hitting over either the trap or the crap.

Hockey is a great game when it's played wide-open, but cleanly and aggressively.

It bores the f*** out of me to see gloves, sticks and helmets all over the ice, or to see 9 players in the neutral zone at the same time.

The Gretzky Era, when teams were scoring in bunches, is still my favorite era for hockey. I like to see offense and checking, and that era had it all for me. It's deceptive to see merely above-average goaltenders with GA's around 2 these days, when the best of that era were around 3.50.

After watching the clip of the sucker job a few more times it sunk in how really nasty that was. Bertuzzi grabs this guys jersey and clocks him in the face, then this guy moore falls in the ice and his face gets dragged along the ice for like 5 feet or so.

Nasty as it sounds Moore deserved it because he cheapshotted Markus Naslund in the previous game.

I was laughing for like 15 minutes when I saw this the first time.

I don't have a problem with hockey fights for the most part. Especially when the team I am cheering for isn't doing so well. The best example of this is the AA hockey team I follow - we travel 250 miles to see them play the Toledo Storm, 300 miles to see them in Cincy and about 160 miles to see them play the Peoria Rivermen. Let me tell ya, the Cyclones have sucked ass all year due to their idiot owner - the arena owner bought out the team after a court battle last summer and has been doing everything in his power to put this team under. So when we go, we know there is very little chance to see them win, but some of those fights that happen in the last minute are the best - it's good to see some heart on a team like that.

I guess hockey sucks so much as a sport, they need something to get the fans to the game. Watching someone get mugged is good entertainment. Ever wonder why every other sport sends you home and suspends you for a fight? This is what football and tennis needs, more fights. I think basketball wuld be better if they had 2 or 3 fights per game. Make it a three free throw penalty, four if you draw blood. Maybe 1st basemen should be allowed to unch runners as they round 1st.

I just read what happened to Mmoore and while I am sure he knew he was going down the next time the two teams played, I do think this type of retaliation deserves suspension and a hefty fine. It's one thing to hit hard but it is another to cause a man to be taken off the ice on a stretcher.

Yeah that is pretty gutless. If you want to take a run at a guy fine. Hell fight him man to man. But to punch a guy in the back of the head is a little b****es move, and he should get a huge suspension for it.

And then drag/punch his head into the ice to make matters worse.

And it takes away from why there is fighting in hockey. When players do idiotic stuff like that, it takes away from the self-policing, which is fighting in hockey. Believe it or not fighting is allowed in hockey precisely to prevent these kind of grotesque acts. When players take the law into their own hands and attack someone unfairly, they should serve lengthy punishments. The whole point it to be able to square up and extract your revenge man to man. Now Bertuzzi is no better than the guy who made a run at his player, if not lower.

The latest is that BC police are investigating for possible charges against Todd Bertuzzi. This will most likely be along the same lines of the McSorely/Brashear incident a few years back. In that deal if I remember right McSorely got 18 months (suspended) jail time and was out for a year. Bertuzzi should at least be gone through this season (including playoffs).
