Gr8Sox
Is the new ballpark going to be called US Cellular Field, leaving out the entire Comiskey heritage? Or, is US Cellular going to be nice and let the Sox keep some of the charm that comes with out a sopnser name on the park? How does US Cellular Field at Comiskey Park sound? I just am a little mad that we are only getting $68 million for this and that the Comiskey family name will be gone from the park.

LowerCaseRepublican
Like they said on Fark....upon hearing the news of U.S. Cellular Field But really who thinks that U.S. Cellular will actually be around in over 20 years with the oversaturation of the cell phone market and all the competition there? Chisoxfn
JR has supposedly promised that the Comiskey name will somehow be utilized in a way around the stadium, but that doesn't mean its mentioned in the stadium name.

Mr. Showtime
damn, would it kill them to use the name in it somewhere. Well, if USC doesn't want the Comiskey name in there, then it won't be. LDF, why you are even letting this bother you is freakin' beyond me.

LDF, why you are even letting this bother you is freakin' beyond me. i am old school and we are losing history here. the comiskey name has been a part of baseball history. on the mlb site under the team report i think has a tongue in cheek article of selling the name. read and post it. i would but i have to leave now. whitesox247
so they had to change it right before our all-star turn so everyone would get confused?
Bighurt52235
I think it should be called "U.S. Cellular's Comiskey Park".
greg775
I want to know if the money will go into the team or JR's pocketbook? If it makes us a better team, I'm all for it. If I was the Trib and Sun Times, however, I would NEVER refer it to as Cellular Park field or whatever. I'd skip the name of the ballpark in ALL stories! It is wrong. CubKilla
I'd skip the name of the ballpark in ALL stories! It is wrong. Look..... if it means the renovations to Comiskey Park/US Cellular Field will be completed according to the specs on the HKS website, then I am all for it. Something has to be done to Comiskey Park. Comiskey Park is slightly more than 10 years old and is already irrelevant when compared to Camden Yards, Jacobs Field, Pac Bell, etc.
cwsox
I want to know if the money will go into the team or JR's pocketbook? If it makes us a better team, I'm all for it. The money goes to ball park improvements. Which is all good. Why be upset? Comiskey was a cheap-ass owner and a bad human being besides. I am all for tradition, but this was inevitable and it gives the ISA money to trfurbish the ball park. There was no sell out here. The only sell-out in the Chicagp area was when Dyche Stadium - named in perpetuity by Northwestern - was re-named to honor some new big $$$$ giver. That was a sell out and classless. RedPinStripes
Here's my take. ............... Comiskey Park was leveled 12 years ago. The new park should never have been named Cimiskey imo. Comiskey started the american league and the sox, but he was an asshole. not many liked him at all. he screwed players out of bonuses and was so cheap to the best team in baseball that they threw a series so they can get their money they should have gotten from him. as long as they fix the upper deck, attact more fans and field a good team, i have no complaints. If this is what it takes to get more asses in the seats, i'll take it. I heard it at least 4 times out of KW's mouth over the weekend. "we're out of money" . He cant say that if they're averaging 35,000 a game. And again. There was only 1 comiskey park and it gone, so i dont car what htey call this one. bjmarte
Of course if JR decides to be a tight ass, which is hard to imagine, and decides not to spend the money or goes cheap on the renovations it will be another PR disaster with the fans. LowerCaseRepublican
Of course if JR decides to be a tight ass, which is hard to imagine, and decides not to spend the money or goes cheap on the renovations it will be another PR disaster with the fans. My grievances about corporate naming of sports stadiums and other civil buildings aside. My only fear is what is going to happen if (with the competition in the cellular phone market and with the constant companies going under all the time) U.S. Cellular goes under. IMO, I don't think the company is going to last 20+ years for JR to get all the money over the timespan. Yeah, JR needs to spend the cash on renovations for the park and not sit with two thumbs up his ass. We've got a great team built this year, so we most definitely do not need a PR disaster to f*** up attendance.
cwsox
The money gets paid up front, as I understand it, or at least is paid on a front end basis. Who cares if US Cellular goes under? Did Houston lose its ballpark when Enron tanked? No, they just got a new corporate sponser, and more money. The money cannot go to JR. The whole thing with the Illinois Sports Authority being in the picture means this is not money that JR can pocket. It goes towards stadium refurbishing in a structured deal. zach23
They can call the place whatever they want, I don't care. I care more about them winning. I would change my name to Gertrude if someone gave me $68 million.

DonkeyKongerko
Cellular companies don't usually go under, they just get bought out by the larger ones. After all, why let those cellular networks go to waste when you can just use them to extend your own. If US Cellular gets bought out by Cingular, Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint our ballpark's name will just change. Actually I think Cingular Park wouldn't sound that bad. I mean at least we don't play our games at Minute Maid Park.

Guest hotsoxchick1
i still think it sucks.. im sick of the corp..names being tossed all over everything like cash blankets... the sox not now nor were ever in a tight money situation.. get jr out of the front office and a owner in there who actually gives two s***s about the team and we wouldnt have to sell out to a stupid corp... we would have a winning team on the field and fans in the seats...........jr blew it back in 94 with the white flag and everyone stays away still to this day......if hes gone i say the attendance goes way up ... hell with all the people we saw at the fest on saturday if half of them showed to the games we would be set for a long time to come...........i dont like celluar park and i wont be calling it that anytime soon.........
