White Sox's Reed trying to prove too good to send to minors

  March 9, 2004

SportsLine.com wire reports

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Chicago White Sox prospect Jeremy Reed has made it clear he's in camp to make the big club, not just an impression.

"He's the first guy in the batting cage every morning," hitting coach Greg Walker said. "When the lock comes off the cage in the morning, he's the first guy in there. Not one day, every day."

Walker and others have been impressed with the 22-year-old top prospect.

"The hitting coaches that have been with him have all been extremely impressed with his makeup," Walker said. "I was talking to (Triple-A Charlotte hitting coach) Greg Ritchie and he said, 'You know what this kid does special, is he makes adjustments. He comes back the next day and makes changes on his own."'

Last season, Reed combined to hit .373 with 11 homers, 95 RBI and 45 stolen bases between Class A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham.

"I'm not just trying to impress this spring," Reed said. "I've obviously already opened up some minds and you want to do all you can to keep that going. I come in here and feel that I'm confident enough and capable to do the job. The ultimate goal is to be in the big leagues. I don't want to sell myself short, and say it can't happen yet. I want to give myself the best chance to reach for that."

Yeah, he's awesome thus far, but the worst thing for him would be to rot on the bench in the Big Leagues.  He'll get his shot in September or next year when Maggs goes.

Agreed UofI. I don't wanna let the kid make the team just so he can sit and watch MLB games from the bench all year. Let AaRow have his shot, and JReed will get plenty of time to patrol the Southside Outfield when Maggs walks.

If Reed continues to impress, do you think the Sox will be more inclined to trade Maggs away due to Reed being good??

I'd say that if the Sox feel they had an adequate replacement, they'd be more likely to trade Maggs. In fact, the Dodgers have let it be known Jackson or Miller would be available in a deal for the right hitter. If Borchard or Reed steps up big, that long rumored Sox-Dodgers trade may happen yet.

If he out plays Rowand in Spring Training and he's not on the Big club, we'll know that Kenny Williams and NOT Ozzie Guillen is running this team and we're in for a lot of what we had last year. I hope that doesn't happen.

i dont think we should rush him like we did with cotts. He's amazing and he'll get his chance. If he's got the work ethic that i think he does, if he doesnt make the team this spring he'll just work even harder, and that can reap even more benefits. I really say start him at AAA and bring him up in July

Well if Scho keeps struggling, I wouldn't be shocked if something like that were to happen. Especially if Reed and Rowand are hitting the ball hard and if Konerko shows that he's maybe out of last years funk.

If the Sox can get Rowand to increase production, Reed to play solid, and Konerko to return to form, then Magglio wouldn't be near as big of a loss.

Plus, the addition of Edwin Jackson and another top prospect would be huge, imo. I still say it would be Jackson, Perez...and one more.

Kenny Williams does, and should, have a say into who makes the club. He's tha general manager of the entire organization and if he feels Reed should get a year of AAA under his belt, then he has every right to send him down. You also have to look at the long term effects of a situation like this. For example, after a year of AAA Reed will be one year closer to his prime. If he doesn't come up till 2005, then he won't be elible to become a free agent until after the 2010 season. This is a strategy the Sox need to start using. Leave guys in the minors until they are ready and don't waste a year of big league service time by bringing them up too soon. With this as an organizational prractice, it would help keep payroll at levels that would give them more flexibility down the road.

On another note, the way Rowand is hitting right now, Reed will really have to step it up to outplay him.

It should take that much to get Magglio.
