is he worth getting the medal????????

i will come back with my answer after some time to think about it.

well i guess no one wants to address this touchie subject and i don't blame them. but i will and not from a racial point either. many of you posters know i am not racial.

the medal of honor to me is for the military for extreme bravery. granted what robinson did in breaking the color barrier took one hell of chance to eat garbage, but does he deserve the medal for that.

my counter is if yes, then lets give one to roberto clemente for his bravery in helping people which lead to his death.

what did jackie do to earn the medal of honor???

jackie did something that was great, but its like cheapening the idea of the medal of honor.

i agree

fact is there wasnt a black ballplayer alive at the time that wouldnt have traded places with jackie...nobody i know of would trade places with a medal of honor winner if they had to go through whatever it was the person went through to get the award...

Are you talking about the Congressional Medal of Honor?

yeah..can you believe this s***...

what does larry doby get out of this...he was the first black player in the AL...and it was only two months after robinson that doby made his debut...doby faced all the same crap robinson..so we do give robinson the soldier's medal..???....this is so friggen stupid it would be comical if it actually wasnt happening...

i only hope to god the robinson family has enough respect for themselves and for what this medal represents to not accept it...

The best soldiers don't always fight their battles on battlefields.

unless you are talking about something he did while he was in service that was overlooked then he will never get the medal of honor...it will never happen

by others defination roberto clemente should get one as well, who was the first hispanic player, or maybe even the first asian player as well.

lets give one to roger maris for breaking the 60 hr record and mark mac, sammy sosa and even bonds for their accomplishment of the same feat.

if any think that he does deserve it, pls explain why?

The Congressional Medal of Honor is given to US Servicemen/women who commit an act that, by it's very nature, could result in gruesome injury or death to the person to whom the Medal was awarded. Soldiers who saved a platoon giving their life by jumping on a handgrenade and smothering it or save countless lives by drawing enemy gunfire to themselves so that countless others can escape deserve the CMH.

Jackie Robinson had his number retired by ALL MLB teams.

Giving Jackie Robinson the CMH is a slap in the face to the brave men and women of the US Armed Forces who paid a gruesome, almost always fatal price for freedom.

cubkilla, until we get a link about what this story really is about, not much to get worked up about. I did the research. The Congressional Medal of Honor as far as I can tell ahs never gone to anyone not service related, and thus this story on its face as we have been given it makes no sense. There are other awards that Congress grants that would seem far more approrpiate for Robinson. I am waiting for the full story before I have an opinion.

what is the difference of the congressional gold medal as to the cmh

they are two totally separate things

http://clerk.house.gov/histHigh/Congressio...y/goldMedal.php

a quick check on google tells me that everyone from Rosa Parks to John Wayne to Nelson Mandela has received a Congressional Gold Medal, which is a totally different thing than the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Different things, different purposes, different meanings

another glance tells me that athletes have received this Congressional Gold Medal, including Roberto Clemente and Jesse Owens. This list of winners is on the link I placed above. Other winners include the Gershwin brothers and George M. Cohan and others from the arts, people like Lady Bird Johnson (probably her environmental work if one looked at it) and Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Gerald and Betty Ford, a wide variety of people that for whatever reason Congress chooses to honor: "Congress broadened the scope of the medal to include actors, authors, entertainers, musicians, pioneers in aeronautics and space, explorers, lifesavers, notables in science and medicine, athletes, humanitarians, public servants, and foreign recipients."

The Congressional Medal of Honor is reserved for people in the military.

Based on that, Jackie Robinson is entirely deserving of the Congressional Gold Medal.
