Mike Jackson and Chris Singleton?

The Chicago Sun-Times is projecting that Mike Jackson and Jason Grilli will secure the final two spots in the White Sox' pen.

Assuming that Dan Wright is in the rotation, the seven-man pen would also include Billy Koch, Damaso Marte, Shingo Takatsu, Cliff Politte, Kelly Wunsch. As for the bench, the paper suggests that both Ross Gload and Jamie Burke will have spots. However, it's our guess that a reserve outfielder, preferably one who can play center, will be picked up at the end of the month, bumping Burke off the roster. Chris Singleton could be a possibility.

Singleton played pretty good last year and I always thought he had a good attitude. I was always a Singleton fan and he had some clutch hits with Oakland. I say why not.

I also don't think Jackson has much left, so I wouldn't be shocked if someone else is the reliever, although it is nice to have a vet presence for the final slot.

Chris Singleton is a good person and pretty solid in the OF, but why take him when Borchard could fit in the 4th OF'er spot. Plus Burke has shown enough to make the team because of his versatility. We may need him as the back up catcher if Sandy gets injured, which I would be more concerned about happening.

Because Chrissy fits the mold of a bench player much better. He can bunt, he can steal, he can pinch hit, and he is a D specialist in CF.

Because the organization would prefer that Joe Borchard get consistent, everyday playing time then having to rot on the MLB bench. I agree with the organization's decision. However, I wouldn't mind seeing Mario Valenzuela come up and take that spot if he plays well enough to earn it. I want to see him get a shot.

BTW, a good example of a team calling up a good prospect and letting him rot on the bench is Cincinatti bringing up Wily Mo Pena and using all his options up right away. He is a tremendous talent, but has had no time to develop sitting on his ass watching baseball.

I thought Willy Mo Pena had no options because he signed a major league contract or something along those lines.

I don't know the exact thing, but he had to be up in the majors by a certain year and after that he couldn't be set down without passing through. It was just a weird contract if I recall.

I think Pena is still like 21 or 22 and the Reds, since they suck, should just be playing him everyday.

I can't remember what it was exactly, but it may have been something along those lines.

However, the thing is, if you are going to play Pena everyday, where are you going to play him? I can see it if you deal Dunn or Casey, but if you're not, you have Kearns and Dunn in LF/RF, Griffey in CF, and Casey at 1B. Now, if you deal Casey, you move Dunn to 1B and Pena to the the OF spot that opens up. If you move Dunn, you then do the same as before.

I think that's what they should do, but it can't be easy to unload Casey. Consider the apparent trouble we are having unloading Konerko, and the fact that Konerko is a better player then Casey(IMO) as well as the fact that Casey is very, very injury prone. That leaves them Dunn. I think they should try and get Perez and Hanrahan out of LA for him. If LA doesn't take it, deal him elsewhere. That's pretty much all you can do.

and why is Singleton available now?

He failed his physical with Pittsburgh, and is a free agent. Supposedly, he has an inner ear problem that is affecting his balance. I used to like him as a part time player, and he seems like a great guy, but since he left, so has his power, and his defense has slipped a bit too. If he could get healthy, I'd sign him and let him play in Charlotte a little to see if he can help the big club.

Thank you.

Failed physical.

Balance problems - a little ear infection you get antibiotcs. This is much more that that.

power down.

defense down.

I always liked Chris. But not like this. Guys always want to go back and date their old girl friends But there is time to see goodbye and be gone and not live in the past.

I don't want my good memories of Chris to be ruined by seeing him play at a mere fraction of what he was.

And I don't want a shell of a once decent player on the bench occupying a roster spot keeping an upcoming future player off the 25 player squad.
