Chisoxfn
-- Bears Eyeing Ogunleye -- Sat Mar 20, 2004 --from FFMastermind.com The Sun-Sentinel reports Dolphins DE Adewale Ogunleye has his first suitor of the offseason, as an NFL source said Friday that the Chicago Bears have interest in the AFC's reigning sack leader. The source said Chicago would not be willing to sign Ogunleye to a restricted free agent offer sheet that would require first- and third-round draft choices as compensation if the Dolphins didn't match the contract. But the Bears, who have the 14th selection in April's draft, may attempt dangling a package that includes other draft choices and a veteran offensive lineman like OG Aaron Gibson. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If it were me, I'd swap 1st round picks, give them Gibson or another olineman and then a 4th rounder and sign Oguleyene. My goodness it would be sweet if they could somehow land him.
southsider2k5
Wow a guy like that would be huge. Right now the one glaring weakness the Bears have is QB pressure. Fix that and this team could make a run.
Chisoxfn
Plus, if they could do it where they swap 1st rounders, they still can get an impact player, have their 2nd round pick and improve. I'd guess they'd be in a position where they could land someone like Lee Evans or a Dockett (DT out of FSU) and then in the 3rd find themselves a linebacker. I mean Haynes obviously becomes a future dt project or competes with Brown, but its not bad having depth at DE. It would be a hell of an offseason if they get a probowl end (Thats only like 24) and a probowl right tackle.
False Alarm
chisoxfn, i'm a huge dolphins fan, and if i were their GM, there's no way i'd make the deal you suggested. ogunleye's 26, led the AFC in sacks last year, and is very solid against the run. you're talking about giving us basically a journeyman OL and a second-day draft pick for him. 20 to 14 isn't a big enough difference in the first round to be worth much. that said, the wanny-spielman duo will probably give him to you guys for an open box of little debbys. seriously, though, no way the fish give him up for less than a first rounder (not swapping spots). they have enough leverage to keep him around for a long time until someone ponies up (they can franchise tag him next year even if he holds out). and personally i'm hoping we sign him long-term over the summer; the dolphins are > 9 million under the salary cap at the moment. Supposedly the Bears are offering a 2nd rounder for him. But thats according to PFT, which is usually garbage. I know Oguleyne has told Spielman he isn't going to play for a one year deal and the Dolphins I guess are capped out so they can't give him the long term deal he wants. He played his college ball at Indiana, so Chicago would be kind of like a return home for him. Who knows if they will do it, but they may not want the controversy. I don't think they get a 1st and a 3rd and the Bears wno't offer them up a 1st rounder.
SoxFan1
The Palm Beach Newspaper reports that the Vikings may be after him also, but the Bears are more interested.
DBAHO
Remember he's always played along with Jason Taylor so he'll need a solid support cast in Chicago. If Miami swaps da 1st rounders with Chicago, they'll probably pick Shawn Andrews since they really need an OL.
dasox24
I would love it if we got Oguleyene, especially if we could somehow keep our 1st rounder! Our defense would be so awesome! We'd be getting the one things that we've lacked for a long time, and that's a really good pass-rushing DE. What Oguleyene also at the same time he's rushing the QB is make the DB's look better by giving the QB less time to pass the ball.
CSF
I'm very skeptical of this entire deal because he is represented by the Scott Boras of the NFL: Drew Rosenhaus. Bear in mind, this guy negotiated all of yesterday with the Bengals with Warren Sapp, then pulled the rug from underneath them and had Sapp sign with the Raiders. I wouldn't trust Rosenhaus as far as I could throw him.

False Alarm
just updating this story. looks like no deal for now. from the miami herald: The Chicago Bears put in a call to the Dolphins on Tuesday to find out if the teams could work out a deal for restricted free agent defensive end Adewale Ogunleye. They might as well have saved the dime. The Dolphins have made it clear they will not accept anything less than a deal that includes a first-round pick and more for Ogunleye. Miami would just as soon have another team sign him to a contract offer as a restricted free agent to give them a chance to match the offer or get the first- and third-round picks they would be entitled to. By contrast, the Bears are unwilling to give up their first-rounder, which is the No. 14 overall pick, according to a report in The Chicago Sun-Times today. Beyond Chicago, two sources in the Minnesota organization said the Vikings have no interest in giving up draft picks in a deal for Ogunleye. The Vikings like Ogunleye but not enough to give up the No. 19 overall pick in the first round as part of a deal. ''No, we're not going to do that,'' a Vikings source said. ``Picks and a big contract? That's a double whammy.'' Agent Drew Rosenhaus acknowledged Sunday the Bears are suitors for Ogunleye and said he looked forward to beginning negotiations with them. On Tuesday, Rosenhaus said that if Ogunleye gets a significant offer from another team, that could put pressure on the Dolphins to deal him. if anything is gonna happen with ogunleye, i wouldn't be surprised if it's the morning of the draft. and yeah rosenhaus is a jerk-off. dasox24
Here's the latest from the Ogunleye going to the Bears rumor: BEARS LIKE OGUNLEYE Agent Drew Rosenhaus said he met earlier this week with Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo to discuss the possibility of doing a contract for restricted free agent Adewale Ogunleye. Rosenhaus said he will talk with Angelo again next week at the NFL owners meetings in Palm Beach. ''We're working on some things, and there's a possibility Wale will also meet with the Bears people,'' Rosenhaus said. ``Several teams have requested a chance to talk to him, and with the meetings being down here, we're going to take advantage of that.'' Rosenhaus declined to say which other teams might want to speak with Ogunleye but did acknowledge Minnesota is one team he has had dialogue with recently. Rosenhaus also said if he can get a deal for Ogunleye, he is confident compensation due the Dolphins -- should they not match the offer -- would be worked out. That might not be so simple, however, because the Dolphins have been firm in saying they are due a first and third-round draft pick for Ogunleye if they don't match a tender offer -- a price deemed too steep by many NFL teams. Chisoxfn
If this is the case, the Bears should move down and try to pick up a 2nd 1st rounder or an extra 2nd rounder and then give the Dolphins one of the 1st rounders and call it even. southsider2k5
This is the guy the Bears NEED. If they can find a pass rush, this team will be good.
bulokis
Man we need this guy. Looking at his numbers, we are getting him on his prime. If Alex Brown develops like Ogunleye, then we have great pass rush on both sides.
