I put this also with the premise if the team is competetive throughout the entire year. I know if the Sox are losing, by the ASB, Mags is as good as gone (as will be a couple of other players), but mainly, with Reed just about ready, Borchard status in the air, and the possible emergence of Sweeney & Anderson, do you think Mags will be offered a long-term contract at the end of the year?

I think our supply of quality young outfielders is precisely why Magglio will be elsewhere next season.

I think Ryan Sweeney's performance in Spring Training has led me to that assumption too. With Maggs and Koch contracts likely not to be renewed at the end of the season it will give us an extra 15 to 20 million of payroll flexibility to sign sum free agents. Mark Mulder would be a perfect target, but I'm not sure if he's arbitration eligible this year, 2005 or 2006.

Maggs is as good as gone. We'll probably have an outfield of Lee, Rowand and Reed next year. If Bochard doesn't make a splash this year he will probably be dealt. Is Kornerko going to be a free agent after this year too?? If so that is another $8mil freed up taking us to $28mil. Then we could get that much needed left handed bat named Delgado and if Loiza and Garland have good years extend their contracts. We could end up with tons of talent if our prospects come through:

Pitching

Cotts - this year or next

Rauch - this year or next

Diaz - this year or next

Fielders

Reed - this year or next

Bochard - this year or next

Valenzuela - within 2 years

Gload - this year

Sweeney - within 2 years

Anderson - within 2 years

Uh Uh!

He won't be back because JR is a cheap s.o.b. who only cares about profit margins!

Um, if I was an owner, I would care very much about profit. You see it every once in a while when an owner tries to win for a season or two in debt, then the team falls apart and is done. Would you rather have this team go bankrupt?

What about if they decide to let Mags go, but sign Nomar and another top FA? I would rather have that happen.

I voted yes, though.

I said "ONLY" Steff! JR doesn't care about winning, ONLY making money!

Reading is fun-da-mental!

;)

Honestly, money would be the first and frontmost thing I try to do if I am an owner. Would you spend your money on stuff other people wanted? Nope.

maggs is gone...What I want to do with the money..is shore up 2nd and Short. If Harris and/or Uribe take the reigns this year and prove they have all star talent then 2nd base is handled and we need a top SS. I think our infield defense is HUGE. Outfielders that can hit are a dime a dozen....we need to solidify the infield. We may lose some RBI's and Run's with Maggs gone...but we'll gain a lot by having a solid defense around the horn.

While I would love to keep chanting magglio's name for more years, I don't have too much faith he'll be back. We already offered him a very fair contract and he turned it down, unless we go deep in the playoffs and he has a change of heart, there is no way mags is back.

The temptation comes at the AS break. Keep him and risk having nothing but water colored memories of the way we were. Send him to a contender, and maybe have something in return.

I would love to see Maggs be the franchise guy like Frank has been. If it was an emotional decision I would give him 5 years at 65 - 70 Mil and smile.

If we are no where near contention at the deadline, he is gone. If we are anywhere close, he is still here.

I voted yes, however, we should undoubtedly get some comp picks for him(offer him arbitration is all we need to do...that's win-win, because he can either accept arbitration and he is here for 05, or he signs elsewhere and we get the other team's first rounder(unless he signs with one of the league's 15 worst teams) plus a sandwich pick)

I truly believe he'll be back.  I didn't feel that way this offseason, but the closer we get to the season, the more my opinion has changed.  I really feel he'll see the market just isn't the same.  He has stated that he likes it in Chicago.  We'll see, but I think it can be done.

I think sum team like Baltimore will overpay for him, since they hav the payroll flexibility and will prob finish 4th in their division this year, and they won't settle for that.

I'm with you Steve. My flaws with JR don't stem from the fact with the way he makes money, but I do think he could turn Chicago into a much more profitable team.

Still, I got a lot of respect for the man. He worked his ass off and put himself in a position where he can be part owner of both the Bulls and White Sox.

I think Baltimore will be throwing bucks at pitching next off season. They added a ton of offense this year.

It seems to me that whenever one of our higher paid players leaves, there's never any money "freed up".

I wanna say something about how he owns two teams that have underachieved terribly over the past few years, but I can't think of a good punchline. :D
