Guillen on Jon Adkins

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The chances of it happening are remote, but White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen did not dismiss the possibility that relief pitcher Shingo Takatsu would begin the season at Triple-A Charlotte.

"I have to give Shingo the biggest opportunity he can have," Guillen said. "Right now, Shingo is going to be in the bullpen. But I don't know from right now until April 4 what we will see."

Takatsu has been roughed up in his six spring appearances. He has an ERA of 10.13 and has given up 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Despite the numbers, Guillen has a feeling that once the regular season begins, the veteran of Japanese baseball will be fine.

"I have a gut feeling this kid is going to be OK," Guillen said. …

The Sox snapped a two-game losing streak by pounding Arizona 13-5 with 17 hits. Six players had at least two hits with second baseman Willie Harris getting a double and a triple. "I'm not feeling for the ball anymore," Harris said. "The first couple of weeks I was just trying to work pitchers, work pitchers. Now I'm trying to hit line drives and get me some hits." … Scott Schoeneweis went five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. "I did a lot of good things," Schoeneweis said. "My pitch count is up. The innings aren't there, but the pitch count is there." In four starts and 16 innings of work, Schoeneweis has an ERA of 7.88. …

Add relief pitcher Jon Adkins to Guillen's list of favorite players. "I love that kid," Guillen said. "I think he threw the ball real well, I don't want to say better than anyone in spring training, but every time he comes out he throws a nice fastball and throws strikes and commands the ball real well." Adkins threw a shutout inning Tuesday to run his spring streak to seven innings. … Outfielder Joe Borchard, who has been nursing a sore left quadriceps, is still among the 34 players on the roster and has begun taking batting practice again.

Prediction:

Jon Adkins is going to wind up vindicating KW's trading away of Ray Durham, especially since we still have Adkins while Oakland lost Durham at the end of the 2002 season.

Ozzie has been calling everybody, even Frank, a "kid". How many times has he said since spring training started, "I love that kid."? :)

Yeah, he called Shingo "Kid". WTF is passing on his mind to be calling the others kid. Doesnt he has another word??? :bang

He just might. I have never seen Jon pitch, but I have always heard he had real good stuff and if he harnessed it, he was going to be very good. A short reliever (or even closer down the road) might be the right situation for him.

Adkins is impressing. Shingo is not, Jackson is still hanging in there, Shoe is struggling as the 5th starter. 8 hits in 5 innings is not what we want to see, but supposedly there is improvement? Grilli is not impressing me either. I think the Sox should be looking at Adkins in the mix ahead of a couple of those supposedly having the clinch on a spot.

I made that some comment in another post. Heck Ozzie is only 40. You and I should start calling him "the kid". We love that kid!

Due to arm injuries when he was a starter I think they are hoping he can stay healthy and strive in the pen.
