Soxbadger
Because what is the point of chest thumping with Boston and New York when you can beat them for a fraction of the cost? All the Sox have to do is win "their" division. It does not matter if Boston and New York win 130 games a piece, as long as the White Sox win "their" division. If we are in the lead at the All-Star break you trade for talent and get it at a fraction of the price. You hope to get into the playoffs and get more revenue, also feeling that your improved team can compete. Had the White Sox not been so crappy in April last year, they would have made the playoffs and been a legit contender. It didnt work out that way, but payroll is not the #1 factor in winning world series. SB
hammerhead johnson
Not too many score fans on this site, I take it? Wednesday's show was an absolute joy to listen to. Not only was the Kenny Williams interview outstanding, but Kelly Wunsch came on & had me rolling the entire time. That guy is hilarious. I love Kelly, Boers and Bernstien love Kelly, and I'm sure that Ozzie does as well, as he has already expressed love for Buehrle, Garland, Loaiza, and Adkins within the past week alone. But nobody seems to have any love for Shingo or Koch.
FlaSoxxJim
It didnt work out that way, but payroll is not the #1 factor in winning world series. Payroll has a lot to do with any one SPECIFIC team having a better chance at a high winning percentage during the year (restricting the somments to high winning percentage rather than making or succeeding in the playoffs because of tthe confounding influence of geography and disparate divisional makeups). Sure, one or two teams will come out of nowhere to get hot and win more games than expected, but that is just the law of averages at work - with 25 low- to mid-payroll teams, one or two are statistically likely to break out. Pegging which one or two teams that will be is another matter.

But just to add to your argument...the Yankees have been to the playoffs 8 straight years for a reason.
