hammerhead johnson
Few young players are garnering more attention in the Cactus League this spring than 19-year-old outfielder Ryan Sweeney of the Chicago White Sox. A second round pick out of Cedar Rapids, Sweeney has already passed $5.5 million bonus baby Joe Borchard and everyone else in the White Sox's farm system. He's expected to open the year in Class A but could be in the majors by the end of the season. "To me, he's ready right now" one veteran AL scout said. "The guy is a god. There's nothing he can't do" Well I'll be damned.

CWSOX45
Cubs may have Jesus, but the Sox got Zeus I like it. That can be his "unofficial" nickname for now! I love hearing about how many talented outfielders we have, we could use one or two to land a solid starting pitcher....Than again I don't really want to give any of them up right now!! Can Sweeney play second base? CWSOX45

whitesoxin'
Once this kid fills out, watch out. He is a god. When I got his autograph last week in Tuscon I told him he was the best 19 year old the Sox have ever had and he got a smile and said "I hope so." Although it could be classified as cocky, i think it is confidence. I like a young kid with confidence. As long as it doesnt go to his head. Nokona
That's more modest than cocky in my eyes.

DBAHO
Sweeney in the majors this season? Sorry but I just can't see it. Like him play in the minors for at least a season or two while we hav the likes of Borchard and Reed ready to play now if we need them. But I hav a special feeling about Sweeney, even though Anderson still has more power potential.

Having seen him in Tucson, I can say (with my admittedly uneducated eye) that he's not far away. We watched him battle a lefthander, he went down 0-2 in the count, hit some fouls, got the count to 2-2 or 3-2 and then drilled a hit to center. There wasn't one at bat where I felt he was clearly overmatched. There is an old saying in baseball, "the good ones come fast". Wouldn't it be nice if we had that type of pleasant surprise, for once? dasox24
In a way, I hope that we don't see Sweeney up here late in the year b/c that either means one of three things: 1) We're out of the playoff race 2) One of our OFers was traded 3) Reed and Borchard are having crappy years and they don't think they're ready for the big leagues Still, no matter what the circumstances, I wouldn't want to see Sweeney up here late in the year. Let him get his AB's in the minors, and maybe he'll have a chance to make the team next year. I would rather see Reed or Borchard up here first anyway to see what they can do.
