knightni
Duke gets off again NCAA won't take action against Duke for Maggette payments By AARON BEARD, AP Sports Writer April 2, 2004 SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Duke did not know that former player Corey Maggette had taken payments from an amateur basketball coach and the NCAA will take no action against the school, an NCAA official said. David Price, vice president of enforcement, said Thursday that the NCAA and Duke investigated whether Maggette should have been eligible after receiving payments in the late 1990s from Myron Piggie, his summer league coach for a Kansas City-based AAU team. A player who receives payments would be ineligible, and the NCAA could have vacated Duke's national runner-up finish in 1999. However, the organization determined the school was unaware Maggette should have been ineligible. After a lengthy investigation, we came to the conclusion that there was insufficient evidence to determine Maggette knew or should have known, and we believe firmly that the institution did not know and should not have known,'' Price said. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said he was told of the decision ``a while ago.'' ``They did it properly,'' he said Friday. ``I thought it was never an issue, so I never paid that much attention to it.'' Maggette was a freshman on Duke's 1999 team that lost to Connecticut in the national championship game. He left school after the season for the NBA. After denying it, Maggette admitted in 2000 he took $2,000 from Piggie. Piggie was sentenced in 2001 to about four years in prison on fraud and tax charges. He was also ordered to pay more than $320,000 in restitution. Piggie had admitted in May 2000 that he schemed to defraud UCLA, Duke, Missouri and Oklahoma State, their conferences -- the Pacific-10, the Atlantic Coast and the Big 12 -- as well as the NCAA by making payments to high school stars who played for him in summer league games. Besides Maggette, players involved were brothers JaRon and Kareem Rush, who played at UCLA and Missouri, respectively; Korleone Young, who entered the NBA draft without playing in college; and Andre Williams of Oklahoma State. Make your own decision.. but I just HAVE to use this emoticon anyway.
Brian
Is this Piggie a booster? If so, action should be taken against the university. Michigan was penalized, Duke should as well.

No, Maggette had taken payments before he enrolled at Duke and Piggie is not a Duke booster. Regardless, Duke had used an ineligible player for the entire season and should have to forfeit all those wins and take down the banner. Not that that would be much of a punishment but thats all they could do. The Michigan situation was far different and they deserved a much more harsh penalty then they received in my opinion.
