Goldmember
linky Keady declines San Francisco offer, will return to Purdue By JON KRAWCZYNSKI, Associated Press Writer April 2, 2004 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Purdue coach Gene Keady has declined an offer to coach at the University of San Francisco and will return for his 25th season with the Boilermakers. Keady interviewed for the San Francisco job last week, but turned the position down after thinking it over for several days, Purdue spokesman Jay Cooperider said Friday night. Keady was in San Antonio for the Final Four and not immediately available for comment. ``We couldn't be happier that Gene is returning for his silver anniversary season,'' athletic director Morgan Burke said in a statement posted on Purdue's Web site. ``Gene's name is on the court in Mackey Arena, it is synonymous with Purdue basketball, and we hope that on Monday he is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.'' Keady holds Purdue's record for wins after going 505-249 in 24 years, and is the Big Ten Conference's longest-tenured coach. He has won six Big Ten titles and took the Boilermakers to the NCAA tournament 17 times. In 1994 and 2000, Purdue reached the regional semifinals, but Keady has never taken a team to the Final Four. He is one of 16 finalists for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame this year. The 67-year-old Keady has one year left on his contract at Purdue. The Boilermakers missed the NCAA tournament three of the last four years and finished 17-14 this season after being ranked in the top 25 early in the year. Purdue ended its season last week with a 71-59 loss to Notre Dame in the first round of the NIT.

Though I'm an IU fan, I'm glad that he should end up finishing his career as a Boliermaker. It only seems right.
