JUGGERNAUT
Let's try this again: That is simply too F'g hard to record. The purpose of this is to determine the value of each player per game. If you want to factor in performance vs good pitcher or game situation vs bad pitcher be my guest. Just creat a new topic. Maybe call it: Evaluating Pitching, Hitting, Defense. The game logs don't include the web gems so you need another source to get that. I suppose I can add era & records of pitchers faced for information only, but there's no way I can include that in a scoring system.

BrandoFan
That is simply too F'g hard to record. The purpose of this is to determine the value of each player per game. Then don't use the word 'value' -- it's anything BUT. Number-crunching is nice, but it helps to look beyond/into the stats. In my example, player A is clearly more valuable than Player B whose PTC score is technically higher. I've seen players go 0-for-4 with a couple of diving 2-out catches that saved 4-5 runs. According to your system, that player is less valuable than a DH from his team who went 1 for 4 with 2 GIDP and an ill-advised foul-ball that canceled an easy stolen base. Etc, etc, etc. I realize it's a daunting task to try incorporate situation batting/pitching, to say nothing of fieding; one might actually have to -- gasp -- watch the games and take mental notes, and often the result will be SUBJECTIVE in nature. But my thing is, either do it right or don't do it at all. That's why I never once participated in the PTC contest.

J Posada caught stealing third, catcher to third. It's hard to evaluate Joe here. He saved a run with the play in the 2nd, non situation with A-ROD, but then he had an error that cost 2 bases. He did play a role in the steal. Give him +1 for the run saved, .5 for A-ROD out, -1 for the error, +1 for the steal. So he ends up with 2 (bat) + 1.5 (glove) = 3.5. Still less than Thomas. He shouldn't get credit for routine plays. Also, a diving catch in a 5-0 game and bases empty is worth a hellava lot less than it would be in a tied ball game and bases loaded. Let's face it: you have to take into account SITUATIONAL performance -- a pitcher giving up 5 ER when the team is leading 11-0 is better than one giving up 4 ER in a 3-0 game, etc -- at some point if you want to assess true value. It doesn't have to alter the point system -- just taken into account when deciding who the player of the game is.

All you have to do is post a message indicating all the super-sized game situations that you feel are worthy of more points. I'll take it into consideration the next time I do this. But for now the first 3 GAMES are HISTORY. I am not going to RE-EVALUATE THEM AGAIN! I'll just try to consider your points of view moving forward. Likewise, I expect the SOX to dump the dead weight based on the results at the end of the year. I'm sick & tired of excuses. If Willie is dead last after 2 months get rid of him! BrandoFan
JAUGGS, Today was a good example of situational that leads to momentum-swinging: Contreras was cruising and Garland had nothing -- Yanks were just about to bash his brains in the 3rd.......and then BOOM! Olivo picks off Matsui and Sox stay alive that inning somehow. I truly believe had 2 runs scored in that inning to make it 3-0, Sox would have died a slow death as they did Thursday. You can't put a price on what Olivo did, it's invariably gonna get lost in the stat colummn . Suffice to say, he would get the glove award at the very least. He also walked a very important walk with Sox down 1-0.
JUGGERNAUT
I gave him 2 pts & w/out question he won glove of the day honors. I do factor the glove pts towards player of the game honors. Olivo finished with 8,5 to Maggs 11. But no one was going to steal this away for JG. You still have to give him credit for 1 er, 8 in & even in the 4th with Olivo's pick JG still had to come up with outs when bases where loaded. That's pretty big. Joe's getting some credit too. A key play in the 4th as well.
