John Rooney Thoughts

Thomas hits a monster drive and this POS is yelling as though the ball is hit to LCF and will DEFINATELY without a doubt be a HR..........It's foul.

He is pulling this bush league garbage EVERY GAME, MANY TIMES OVER, WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

If you can't read the ball off the bat and if can't be bothered to phrase the exclamation so the listener knows it's gonna be close and not a sure thing....then get the f*** out of the booth.

To him, foul liners into seats are doubles until very last moment; flyballs that don't even make it to the track are orgasmed over as though they were gonna leave the yard; HR-distance drives that clearly will twist foul by many feet are "hit deep, waaaay back....ooh, it goes JUST foul".

Contrast him with Hawk who knows immediately and doesn't play with the viewer.......Either Rooney is incompetent or he intentially tries to generate excitement over nothing Chip Carey style, and considering it's RADIO where fans cannot judge for themseleves, it's UNFORGIVABLE.

The b**** is blinder than a bat!

Hawk did his trademark "THAT BALL HIT DEEP..." when Thomas hit that foul ball.

It didn't work out, unfortunately, but it's cool.

Rooney is okay in my book. I could probably do without Ed Farmer, though.

People, it's NOT JUST ONE PLAY....althought he should have made it clear it was going to be close -- as opposed to pretending it was a sure thing HR.

I used to listen to this dork quite a bit and he's like this EVERY GAME, ALL THE TIME.

I can forgive him for his INABILITY to PAINT a PICTURE for the LISTENER. Maybe.

But when he resorts to misrepresentation/deception, or is too lazy to properly phrase himself and instead gets his listeners' hopes up on every semi-hard hit ball, it's unacceptable. He is playing with his audience's nerves, that scumbag.

Guess what? Hawk works in a different medium.

Fans can decide for themseleves and not rely on Jon the Blind Squirrel.

Just listen to JR next time. His descriptions are bloody awful. His only saving grace is that he is not afraid to chide a Sox player making an error or rag on the umpire.

Well, Rooney's off to a bad start this year. However, if you look back, he's been a lot better in the past. He should get better as the season goes on.

I hate Rooney and Farmer. Their both kinda boring. It seems as if their schmucks picked up off the street to call a game on the radio. Hawk and Tom Pacoriek (sp) were the greatest broadcast tandem ever!!!

One single thread has made me lose a whole lot of respect for this site and some of the people who post on it... I'm gonna take a break from here for a while, see you all sometime soon hopefully.

I wasn't going to comment, but I feel that this post has stepped over the line between criticism and just plain indecency.

Brando, you may not like the radio guys that do the Sox games, but this post was blantantly disrespectful and stupid.

I don't blame ABoz for wanting to distance himself from this post.

I'm sorry he wants to stop posting altogether because of it, but that is his choice.

I have no problem with their demeanors, styles, quirks, game knowledge, etc.

My problem is this: when, say, the bases are loaded and the game is close, if a Sox hits a hard-but-routine one-hopper to 3rd, John Rooney makes it sound like it could be a double and gets Sox fans' hopes up that first second. I don't think it's right to play with people's emotions.

This guy can do no wrong with Sox fans because he actually criticizes Sox players, which is fine and dandy if you're a color analyst, but his PRIMARY duty is to be our eyes and ears and to TRUTHFULLY and ACCURATELY and IMAGINATIVELY describe the ACTION, espcially when the game is on the line and loyal fans hang on every pitch.

I was excessively harsh/vulgar in the thread title and for that I apologize, but this guy has been bugging me for a few years now.

I disagree with you.

I have MLB audio and listen to many other teams during the year. Rooney is excellent! I like Scully and Ross from the Dodgers (forget Rick Monday), and Joe Buck from the Cards but the rest are all the same bland stuff.

I sense Rooney is trying to bring a little more energy into his broadcasts this year and I have no problem with it. I applauded the additional energy he brought to the ALDS for ESPN.

Farmer is Farmer, he knows much more about baseball than the sainted idiot Steve Stone (who just chalked up Furcal flubing a routine grounder to youth, the guy is 28 years old). But Ed does get out of whack sometimes, maybe Father Giovinetti from St Rita hit him a couple too many times. I went to Rita too, so I'm prejudiced. Campbell from ESPN is better though.

But neither one of these guys will build up a bum to please the office, they pretty much let the game decide. They are my summer companions, I spend many hot evenings with them on the patio listening to and scoring the games.

Try scoring a game from Hughes and Santo some time! You can't even tell what inning it is!

I've hated Rooney since day one when he was paired up with gary thorne on tv. what a disaster. a couple of guys who didn't know the difference between a hockey puck, a baseball, and a basketball.

But somehow rooney seems to be sainted by sox fans...I'll never know why.

I completely agree. I have listened to Rooney for many years now and really like the way he calls a game. Farmer, on the other hand, can put me to sleep with his broadcast.

What happened to the Aboz I knew who had a pair of balls. How in the world can one thread make you lose respect for your fellow posters? Have you EVER even heard Rooney and Farmer from Kentucket? Brandos thread may of been over the top but I don't understand why it should upset you. Well, take some time off from Soxtalk and stop watching Lifetime!
