Chisoxfn
Wow, this guy showed some serious balls. I think a lot of people have questioned him in the past for the way he's pitched. This is only one game, but he was all over the place early on and Ozzie showed confidence in him and damn did he get in a groove. This has to feel awesome for him. So I'm gonna give major props to Garland on todays start.
mac9001
I still can believe he walked 7 guys and only gave up one run. Kinda makes you wonder how good he can be if he only walks two or three
southsider2k5
Those two innings where he was walking everything in sight were scary though, but it was nice to see him pitch through it.
KipWellsFan
Hats off to Jonny and Kudos to Ozzie for keeping the faith!

Ozzie left him in there so he can work through it. Jerry would of yanked him right away. This has to build confidence for Jon. Great Game by Garland. witesoxfan
And let me be the first to say that we lose this game last year if JM is managing. He would have taken Jonny out in the 5th when he started walking everything that held a bat at the plate, a reliever would have come in and then given up tons of runs. The Yankees are probably the ones winning 9-3, not us. Props to Ozzie for that move. Also, props to Jon for getting off to a good start this year(albeit one game). His ERA the past 2 Aprils has been like 8.00.

DBAHO
I see a lot of similarities b/w Jon Garland and 2 pitchers from Florida, Brad Penny and Josh Beckett who had really good years while Ozzie was down there last year.

The Critic
Maybe I'm greedy, but I was hoping Oz would've let Jon go for the complete game. I thought it would be a great thing for JG to CG the Spanks in their own building.

IF he wasnt at 120 pitches, yeah, I'd agree...but it is his first start, and we don't need to stretch him out that much yet. We are gonna need a healthy JonnyG this year to win the division. hammerhead johnson
Jon really started to kick ass after we got him a nice lead. I've always liked Garland because of his no-nonsense, laid back demeanor. He's a big Bob Marley fan as well. I like that.
The Critic
Good points, Capn and Tony. It is a long season, and it was good to put Takatsu into a game he couldn't possibly blow for them. I guess I was just hoping that Oz would send Jon a vote of confidence by letting him finish, that's all. But on the other hand, the vote of confidence was leaving him in to fight through the walks. I guess that's why I'm sittin' on my fat ass at home watchin' the game, right?
Capn12
Well, the patience he showed by not only letting Garland pitch through his control issues, but not even getting anyone up, will IMO go a LONG way towards letting Garland know what is expected of him this year. He will no longer be treated like the 21 year old "phenom" who will be bailed out of teh first sign of problems he encounters. And ALOT of that credit goes to Ozzie handling the lineup card, and not Jerry Manuel.
Jordan4life_2007
Lets not forget the big play Olivo made. If he hadn't thrown out Matsui that inning couldn've ended up totoally different...
Texsox
THE Yankee announcers felt that if JM was still the manager, that Jon wouldn't have made it out of the 4th. I really liked the way he came back and pitched so well. The announcers mentioned a few times about his "California" cool. All in all, it was Cy Garner out there today. We all know that last year he could also be Judy Garnlans. Let's hope Judy stays home a lot more than last year.
Elcaballo45
This morning in Yahoo fantasy baseball: Jose Contreras => Bench Jon Garland => P WOO WOO I didnt have the balls to start Garland today, and I was quite happy I didnt when he walked 4 guys in the 5th. But of course, i was a little pissed i didnt start him when we decided to go off in the 4th and 5th innings.... Oh well... Good outing by Jon, just needs a little more control, and he'll get his 16-18 wins this year.
Gene Honda Civic
Great way to bounce back by Jon today... There's no way you leave him out there for the ninth with 119 pitches thrown, even that is excessive to me. That's Dusty Baker style managing. Josh beckett was pretty much on a pitch count all year last year, and almost never threw over 100 pitches while in the minors. What happened? In October, the kid was MVP. The Cheat started JG in 2 of his fantasy leagues.

The Cheat started JG in 2 of his fantasy leagues. Good point, cheat. One person you can look at is, from the Cubs, Carlos Zambrano. He was great during the regular season - but time after time, Dusty kept him out there for 120 pitches, 100 pitches, etc. etc. Come late September and playoff time, he was off his game. Im glad how Jon pitched today, but 110 should be a limit, maybe even lower. Again, though, I'm happy as hell how Jon pitched today. I feel good with Mark out on the bump tommorow too. BrandoFan
Big game for Jon Garland. He was pretty damn bad early on but somehow survived and after that was cruising. If shutting down the Yankees as he did in the latter part of the game, in their house, in a MUST-win game for the Sox doesn't get him to BELIEVE in himself, nothing will. Hopefully he builds on this and becomes what Bartolo Colon was last year -- 3.90 ERA but in less innings. I'll take it for now. He does need his curveball big-time. It would set up his change/four- and two-seamers MUCH better.
TLAK
CWSGuy406 is right about the pitch count. What the hell is Ozzie trying to prove with Garland's first start of the year? The season lasts 6 months, he's got a guy who hasn't pitched all year in the pen (takatsu) and another one who could use a tune up (Marte) after a disaster. Adkins and Cotts are ready too. After all those early walks Garland wasn't going the distance anyway. I would have pulled him after 6 complete, or about 100 pitches. We need Jon to beat KC! Next week and in August. Chisoxfn
I'm assuming their will be some extra days off early on so it wasn't necessarily a big deal. Most importantly I think they wanted to set the tone with Garland to tell him we expect you to carry yourself and step it up. He's now a #3 pitcher and thats going to put a lot more pressure on him. The Yanks announcers also said that Garland will be an ACE. I thought they sucked early on, but the more I listened to them the more I really liked them. They really called a good game. Harry Chappas
I might have to question allowing Garland to throw 119 pitches and go 8 innings? Is this true. I think 7 and pulled would have been good. Dusty killed his guys doing this
