Jon Garland

What the hell is Ozzie trying to prove with Garland's first start of the year?

He was trying to prove that he will have confidence in Garland, no matter what Garland does.

I don't want Oz to make a habit of it, but a start now and then, to me, is no big deal.

Can you imagine the confidence level JG must have now? He got in a jam against the best team that money could buy and what did Ozzie do? He left him in there to work his way out of it. JG made his pitches and trusted his defense and got out of that treacherous 4th inning. And after the Sox gave him some run support, he went cruise control the rest of the way. And how about that defense! Next week when Garland gets the Royals at home, I just have a feeling that he'll go into that start feeling damn near invincible. If he learns to go after hitters and keep the ball down consistently......he's gonna make alot of teams queasy when it's his turn in the rotation.

Jon Garland is a golden god in my eyes.... still he better not walk 7 guys again. I am happy with his start, he's been my favorite sox since we acquired him really..... but Im not gonna say he pitched great, because he didn't.

I got to see Schone yesterday in Spanker Stadium on opening day... he sucked to begin with to... but he was effective as well.

Wow, this guy showed some serious balls.

If by balls you mean the opposite of strikes, then I agree. I think the real props should be given to the clutch defense of Olivo, Konerko, and Crede in the fourth. Without that, he would have been dead meat, and the whole Judy Garland tirade would be on right now. The 11 or 14 balls in a row (I cant remember the exact number) was inexusable. Lets just thank god that everything worked out and he settled down soon enough.

And dont get me wrong, Jon is one of my favorite players on this team, and Im hoping that with Ozzie sticking with him, he'll finally gain the confidence that hes lacked for so long.

Ozzie has said that he wants his starters to have a 9-inning mindset. I felt he pulled Buehle too early in his start. The fact that JG was on such a roll caused Ozzie to send him back out for the 8th. I have no problem with that. Getting Takatsu in the game when he did was a good move also.

Letting Jon pitch the 8th ina 9-1 game was STU-PID.

105 pitches is very different from 119 if studies are to be believed.

Whoever said the season is a marathon was damn right.

Shingo needed work. Adkins needed more work. Marte hasn't pitched in 3 days.

I've got a feeling that the Sox could beat the Yankees 27-0 and you would still fine something to complain about. Garland throwin 119 pitches every once in a while is no big deal. Now if this becomes a regular thing, that's totally different...

And I, in turn, have a feeling you're a homer who cares more about such MEANINGLESS fantasy league s*** as Complete Games....at the expense of a young pitcher's health and bullpen's readiness for the next game.

I liked what Cooper said to Hawk after today's nice win:

He said if pitch counts are high, they can do some things to

counter that, like no long toss the next day, having the pitchers

lay off.

I like what Hawk said, that he doesn't believe in pitch counts meaning

squat and Coop sort of agreed with him.

FROM MLB.COM

The White Sox were not the only ones impressed by Jon Garland's eight innings of four-hit baseball Friday.

"He was throwing hard," said Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter of Garland. "He was throwing 95 and he didn't throw too many balls straight. He was wild with a few guys, but he threw some pretty nasty pitches."

Pitching coach Don Cooper didn't need to review any game film to figure out the positives and negatives stemming from Garland's first start. On the plus side, Garland was given the opportunity to pitch his way out of trouble and ultimately decided whether he earned a win or loss. Garland made good on that chance, holding down the Yankees on 119 pitches after struggling through the fourth inning.

But Garland's wildness was of slight concern to Cooper. The right-hander had a few mechanical flaws that led to a career-high seven walks, including four in the fourth.

"He was rushing off the rubber, dropping his angle," Cooper said of the causes behind Garland's wildness. "A guy who has outstanding movement all of a sudden gets extra movement and that movement is taking it up and away to his arm side and out of the zone. That was his thing in the fourth.

"Before and after, he regrouped. But we will have to be quicker to catch that and adjust. It might not always work out the way it did. But Jon has worked hard and deserves that good luck."
