1549
I remember when he was viewed as a decent prospect...and it seems like he is at least back on the right track. Do any of our minor league experts know if he has the stuff to be a decent major league reliever in the future?
SouthSide2004
It's really hard to say at this point. He's 26 years old (and turns 27 later this year) and is pitching in high-A. He was a first round supplemental draft pick, but he has always had control problems until recently. In my opinion, he is going to need dominate for the Warthogs so he can move up to at least AA this year. Otherwise, I see White Sox giving up on him after this season. Guest JimH
I spoke to Duane Schafer, one of the Sox top minor league admin guys, in Tucson. He said Purvis is finally healthy and they've made some mechanical tweaks to help him repeat his delivery. Said they've always liked his arm, it's just that he's never been able to keep it all together. They want to give him lots of innings at W-S and basically see how it goes. danman31
That sounds like this is a make or break season for him then.
1549
I thought I read he was going to be in AA this year?
Rex Hudler
My guess is that the odds are too long for him...... Rob is a good guy, but was one of those guys they took because he had a good arm, not because he was a good pitcher. Sometimes you win with those type guys, sometimes you don't. JimH, did you ask Duane Shaffer why his son is playing at the AA level for the 3rd consecutive year, while he should still be in Class A if at all? It might be smart to ask that a little more tactfully than I just put it, but I think you get the point.....

Although it seems they released a few guys and then went ahead and re-signed them right away. Paperwork issues? EDIT: my bad, he's in the lineup at Birmingham. Either I misread or it was some paperwork thing.
Rex Hudler
Someone on one of these boards suggested he had been released, but that was never the case. He just wasn't listed in the Birmingham News article that announced the Barons roster. I know my assessment of Shaffer is harsh, but it is the truth. I feel sorry for him because you can almost see the lack of conifdence in his demeanor. I don't think he truly believes he belongs in AA. Catcher Jonathan Aceves was placed on the "DL" since the Barons were one player over the limit.
