Latest Expos Rumor

Riverside county, otherwise known as the Inland Empire is the latest group to get involved in buying the Expos.

Their plan is a lot different then any other team. First off, they are going to offer 150 million for the team. They won't be able to get a new stadium till 2006, and plan on playing the 2004 and 2005 seasons in the city of Lake Elsinore on the Padres A Ball Affiliates Stadium.

That stadium doesn't hold many, but they talked to the architect and can build 25,000 temp seats, pushing the seating arrangements to a bit over 30,000.

The difference in this team is that instead of selling PSI liscenses or whatever they are called, they are going to sell stakes of the team. You basically invest in the team, and then have the right to buy season tickets.

I figured that was an interesting concept. I also think this was a pretty good idea for a location. The inland empire is close to Anaheim stadium, but because of traffic it takes at least an hour to get there. Then you have the Dodgers which are 2 hours away or so. The key thing is, that the Inland Empire is one of the fastest growing regions out there. Also, Lake Elsinore is in the process of building 50,000 homes in the next 10 years or so.

The only reason I know this is I do a lot of work in the region when it comes to real estate.

The one road block has to be the fact that they have to play in a minor league stadium. Otherwise, I really think this is a legit deal and could turn into a very sucessful team. Oh ya, its about an hour and 15 minutes from the Padres park.

The key question is, whether the market is there. They are going ape s*** building stuff out there. Its pretty much the only area of open land in the Socal region thats still available and prices there have started going through the roof, just like most places.

My sentiments exactly Baggs. The fact that Chisoxfn admitted that Anaheim, LA, and SD are all within an hour or two of the Inland Empire makes an Expos move to CA another possible MLB folly. If they're going to move the team, move it to a market that would have a fan base and no MLB choice within 3 or 4 hours drive time from said market.

I know I wouldn't go to many if any games there.

I do know one thing, DC hasn't supported a team in the past and well, some owners are against bringing another team into a market with Baltimore.

It isn't like DC is getting a whole lot bigger, afterall, there isn't that much buildable land around there. Of course, thats me assuming things.

I live like 10 minutes from the Angels, there is no way I'd drive an hour to go over and watch this other team unless they were playing the Sox or Cubs or if Pedro or someone was pitching.

I do think it would be ridiculous with 4 ball clubs in one area.

I'd say it comes down to Portland or this deal.

That is a horrible idea, NOBODY wants to even go to the 909, let alone put a baseball team there, Riverside is out in the middle of nowhere, and it's mullet central too. Kinda scary

Lol, the 909. Aren't Kevin and Bean great :)

Your right on that. The only people that are going to want to watch those games are those out there.

That idea has about as much chance of happening as Mike Ditka becoming the head coach of the Lions.

It's called territorial rights and TV markets and there is no reason for MLB to think of adding another to the mix, whether the population base is there or not. They are having the same problem in DC, but there are reasons (mainly keeping politicos happy) to grease Peter Angelos palms and move a team there.

The bottom line is, someone talks and someone prints it. It doesn't give it credibility.

Your mom lives near there right Michelle? Do you think she'd support a new ball club if it was there?

yeah jas shes in apple valley, around victorville, lancaster/palmdale area... anyhow she is very involved with the mavericks out there... they are the a team for the brewers....they have season tickets and do alot of functions with them and such.....(only because theres no sox out that way im sure lol)......anyhow she would rather go to those mavericks games instead of the others just because of the atmosphere and such..... ive tried to get her to come with me to a few angels games and a couple of padres games when i was out visiting and she wouldnt budge.....so unless the spos put their minor system out that way i can honestly say she wouldnt support it.......

You got to get her to some Padres games. They are a blast. They got a great stadium, and I am excited to see what there new one looks like in a year or two. Either way they have awesome fans and its a great atmosphere to see a ball game, especially during day games.

Anaheim is really nice too. We'll have to catch a game when your out here next.

I am thinking the same thing, territorial rights in Southern Cal -

and DC has failed twice, not too keen about giving them a third shot -

I think Puerto Rico would be a fun place to have a team!

And Ditka as a Lions coach? I hope that never comes to pass. Everyone here is very happy with Michigan-born Mariucci falling into our laps.

jas i have tried many times to get her to go to games with me out there.. heck when she was in town here last summer, it was all i could do to get her to take my boys to a game in september..(i had been called into work and i had promised them we would go).. so i twisted her arms on that one......she doesnt like being in the big stadiums anymore.. she said she would just as soon sit in a small stadium and watch the kids play, where they play with heart and soul instead of paying big bucks to watch the whinney major guys stand around like we owe them something....lol.. i hope to gosh i dont get that senile when i get old.......... :D i do have to agree with ya though going to pads games is a fun time.... i wasnt to hot on the angels games that damn volcano gets on my nerves when it smokes....cant see s*** for at least 10 or so minutes if you have a wind if you dont it takes alot longer lol...........but i do love the pads stadium ..........

I so badly want them do land in Portland.  I t would take me less than an hour to drive there.  Right now, the Mariners are my nome team, even though they're well over two hundred miles away.  I've always wanted a big league team in my area.

Don't worry.  I won't become an Expos fan.

i hope portland does get a team...i thin kthey have orived with years and years of sell outs with the trailblazers that its a good sports town... and its the fastest growing city in america...they deserve a shot...is the commitment there to build a ML stadium???...im thinking a retractable roof because of the horrible weather in april in the PC WEST???.
