MINNEAPOLIS -- Shortstop Angel Berroa was placed on the Royals' 15-day disabled list Saturday after suffering severe migraine headaches.

Shortstop Andres Blanco was called up from Double-A Wichita and was in the starting lineup for Saturday night's game against the Minnesota Twins, his Major League debut.

Berroa, who missed the series opener against Minnesota, was taken by ambulance from the team hotel to Hennepin County Hospital on Friday night.

He was given a series of tests including a spinal tap, a procedure that requires complete rest for 48 hours and additional rest for a five-to-seven day period.

The tests were negative, trainer Nick Swartz said.

"They ran a series of tests for anything that might cause the migraine headaches and everything came back normal on the tests," Swartz said.

Although Berroa originally was said to have flu-like symptoms, no virus was found.

"The diagnosis was that he was experiencing severe migraine headaches which caused the other symptoms," Swartz said. "He spent the night at the hospital for observation and was released this morning. He's back at the hotel resting at this time."

General manager Allard Baird rushed to the hospital near the Metrodome during the first inning of Friday night's game to be with Berroa, last year's American League Rookie of the Year.

"He was in tough shape," Baird said. "You kind of feel helpless when you see somebody in that much pain. But when I left him last night, he was resting a lot better and he was more comfortable."

The Royals plan to send Berroa to Kansas City on Monday while the club has an open date before a three-game series at Cleveland.

Swartz said he expected Berroa to be ready to play when his 15 days on the disabled list expires.

"From all indications from what the physicians here in Minnesota have told us as well as conversations with physicians in Kansas City that have followed up on this, we're confident that this was a single isolated episode," Swartz said.

Swartz said one concern is avoiding an infection.

"We play in dirt and one of the best place to get an infection would be out on a dirt field. We're just really taking the proper conservative approach for his overall health," he said.

Swartz said no specific reason has been determined for Berroa's migraine headaches.

"The last time he ate was breakfast on Wednesday morning and the headaches started after he started vomiting sometime (Friday) morning. He didn't have any food in him and he was probably slightly dehydrated at that time," Swartz said.

"You can get a migraine from fatigue or lack of eating. So that is a possibility."

Swartz said that he expects Berroa to begin feeling better quickly.

"If he goes about the proper rest, gets his fluids up and gets back on a proper eating schedule, it may never happen again," Swartz said.

15 Day DL for Migranes  Jesus Christ ive never heard of 15 day migranes, I think there is more to this story :headshake

Not if he's been suffering from them for awhile. Migraines can damn near incapicate you. You have trouble seeing, become very weakened, and can barely stand. Trust me, it's not a picnic. I've had them and they hurt like hell.
