Call it a hunch

ya know its really hard to tell if your really a sox fan brando... i mean, you essentially just said that Scammy is better than maggs, and we all know thats just Bulls***.  (yeah with a capital B )

Sosa usually hits .280 40 120 .950 OPS with triple digit walks and K's each year. He is very marketable and very likeable(except to those who dislike his hot dogging ass), and brings fans to the park.

Maggs usually hits .300 30 110 .850 with more BB's then K's, but never more then 70 or 80. He is likeable and marketable, but does not bring fans to the park.

If Sosa is 34, I take him in a second over Maggs. Due to the fact that he is 36, I consider it long and hard, but in the end of the day, I probably take Sosa over Maggs anyways. Maggs is a great player, but unless he has 2002 every year, he is not as good as Sosa IMO.

The only thing I would change is changing Maggs to 930 OPS and Sosa to 990 -- with Alou, Ramirez and Lee, he should have a nice line-up protection for once.

Also, Sammy will be 36 later this year.

And you're absolutely right about Sammy's vastly superior off-field value. Hell, Cubs outdraw team on the ROAD -- and a lot of it originated with Sammy in 98.

Finally people point to Sosa's 17 Mill per....Guess what? He signed it back in 2001, coming off a fantastic year; the market was VERY generous back then too, which is no longer the case. So the figure is misleading.

That is a very tough call but I go with Maggs simply because he is a fan favorite whereas Colon wasn't around long enough to gather the same following someone like Burhle.

You could really go either way these two. Colon is almost one of a kind of a power pitcher that can easily pitch a complete game. When he just uses his fastballs and nasty stuff, he's a very dominating pitcher. Helps the bullpen out tremendously as well.

Maggs is the fan favourite in the South Side, but I still think when most ppl think White Sox, they think Frank Thomas, not Maggilo Ordonez, but that's just me. Supply and demand wise, it's much easier to get a Maggs type of outfielder, than a Colon type of pitcher. But the backlash of lettin Maggs leave could be so great, it could hav big implications in the future.

Maggs easily on this one. Colon only plays every 5th game.

I think the main issue here pertains to how much money JR & Co. are willing to commit to the team's payroll.

Is Mags worth 13-14 million? Not if the team insists on keeping payroll around $60 mil. And even if the payroll is increased, you can get a better defensive player with good offensive numbers for a third of what Mags will cost.

If JR is willing to spend $75-$80 million, then you can give Mags enough to keep him. Otherwise, signing Mags pretty much guarantees mediocre(or fluky teams chock full of rookies) teams for 5-6 years.

I'd take Colon because we have a very very strong crop of outfielders. Plus I think you can sign guys like Gonzalez, EVerett, etc to very affordable contracts and get not near the production of Maggs, but quality production.

However, I'm not saying I'd go that way. I'd try to get some other less important contracts off the books, for example, paying any first baseman that isn't the best in the game or one of the 3 best 8 million a year. First base is a position that you can easily find production and therefor when you have a limited budget, I don't believe it is wise to spend so much money their.

14 mill for a stud RF thats just in the beginning of his prime...ya, I'd do it, as long as they made the necessary shifts. Of course the Sox would also have to step up their payroll a bit.
