New Twins Ballpark – Bad for the Sox?

Twins won world titles in the humpdome in 87 and 91

Sox built a new stadium in 92 -- sox have won 2.5 division titles since -- Twins have won the last 2 years

I know while Ventura was governor NO public funding was going to go to sports stadiums -- don't know if that's the case now, but I suspect a new stadium would require heavy private funding. -- Maybe soxy or someone else closer to the twin cities can fill in the details.

I don't see any new revenue in the twins immediate future. Not without Pohlan selling the team.

Minnesota's new governor is onboard for a new ballpark that utilizes some type of public money. Right now both St. Paul and Minneapolis are making the case for why their city should be the location. The public officials seem to be lining up and Governor Ventura is no longer a factor.

I hope Minnesota does get a new ballpark. I've been to the dome and it certainly doesn't feel like you're watching a baseball game there. Anything that is good for baseball anywhere I'm all for.

As for the affect on the Sox, it shouldn't matter. The Sox have to worry about getting their fans to come to the Cell. Chicago is a larger market than Minnesota and if the Sox management does their job well, they won't have to worry about Minnesota's new stadium causing problems for the Sox.

Gov Paulenty has already said we will not lose the Vikings or the Twins "on my watch" so he is on board for government funding on new stadiums for both the Vikings and the Twins. The University of Minnesota is also looking for a new stadium on campus as well. These have been issues up here since I moved here in 1998. I'm not holding my breath but some progress has been made.

I think getting them out of that Metro Dome helps every team that plays them. I understand the point about extra revenue, but it comes down to wins and losses. and that place has got to be the biggest home field advantage in baseball. Especially with their secret weapon (air conditioning for the opposing team.)

I hope they do get a new park, then I can finally take my wife to The Mall of America that she's been begging me to do for years. I keep telling her "When the Twins get a new park."

I think you give in to your wife too easily. :D But, if your line works I want to know your secret. My wife never listens to me.

I would say it should help the Sox.

Reinsdorf spends like his competition, when the Indians spent, he spent. If the Twins spend, I doubt he will just sit idly and let the Sox lose.

He likes to keep the Sox cheap and competitive, not cheap and no chance of winning.

Good for the Twins.  It may sound like treason, but anything to help the small teams compete with the Yankees and Red Sox of the world is fine by me.

Another thought too. I think a new ballpark for the Twinks (outside park maybe) will make more even competition for visiting clubs. If the Twinks have to play in a real baseball stadium, and not a garbage dump, maybe they won't have that home field advantage only they can have.

She's a Sox fan and likes going on mini vacations to see them play. This way we can kill two birds with one stone. Oops - here comes PETA after me!

You may want to wait. They're planning on more than doubling the size of the place. :o

I have seen a game there too. I personally enjoyed it more than a game at the Cell...besides the open roof. The whole atmosphere was awesome there...and I cannot stand the Twins.

I've been to the Metrodome, and that's the only place, so I really do not have a strong opinion on this issue.

Personally, I liked it...mainly because I was watching the Sox play. There is nothing great as far as food is concerned(hot dogs, nachos, pretzels...all you would expect...nothing like corned beef sandwiches or churros or anything like that), but it fills you up.

I know for a fact that it is a dome and does not have a retractable ceiling. The roof almost looks like a balloon, and I'm afraid if they tried to open it, it would pop and would fly all around like balloons do when you let the air out of them.
