BrandoFan
I don't care if he gives up 400 runs against the Cubs on Sunday, as long as we get the win. See this stupid, low-expectations logic is exactly what I was talking about. You're almost preparing yourself that Mark can't keep the Cubs, the biggest foe the Sox will ever have, down to 2 runs or less. I guess you're one of those who thinks Esteban's outing on Sunday was actually good. Afterall, he won.....Who cares that he had mediocre velocity and was hanging the s*** out of that breaking ball, right? No, Mark Buerhle is getting paid big bucks to keep his ERA under 3.50, which with good run support will translate to 20+ wins. You want to hang wit da big boys like Boston and NY, you better demand more of Buerhle and Loaiza - they're gonna have to face some scary-ass line-ups and to outduel pitchers like Shilling, Pedro, Vasquez and Brown - maybe Randy Johnson, too - come October. They pitch like Parque and Sirotka pitched in 2000 ALDS, and Sox get swept. Simple as that.

Gene Honda Civic
They pitch like Parque and Sirotka pitched in 2000 ALDS, and Sox get swept. Simple as that. Screw that -- I'll take a performance like those two anyday... Those two didn't have the most talent in the major leagues, but they battled, they were warriors on the hill. They didn't get intimidated, or back down from anyone. They pitched with heart. They problem in the 2000 post season was not our pitching staff. If MB pitches like them in October, we'll have no problems.

Remember, Seattle offense was pretty average in 2000 - no match for the Yankee and Red Sox juggernaut. Buerhle must step the f*** up and put up Mark Mulder numbers. The Critic
Another big reason the Sox got swept in 2000 is because they couldn't hit anything. That's the biggest reason the Sox got swept. Another big reason was that Piniella got into Manuel's head, and maybe Manuel was intimidated by the bigger stage. Winning without your best stuff is a major quality of a good pitcher, and Loaiza did just that on Sunday. He bore down and toughed out a win against a good team. Am I a BIT concerned about Loaiza as compared to last year? Maybe, but 8-3 is still good enough for me, and I'll gladly wait and see what this rotation can do in the postseason. I'm confident that if Buerhle/Garcia/Loaiza/Garland get there, they'll make it tough on whoever they face.
upnorthsox
Has everyone's opinion of Marky-Mark sunk so low that we're happy with a 4.30 ERA from our Number 2? Could "we" wait until he (hopefully) shuts down the Cubs in Wrigley before bumping this thread? ERA's a composite stat and thus a moving target, I'm just as confident in Mark now as I was less than 2 weeks ago on June 17th when his ERA was 3.65. greg775
Great job bringing this back. I'm not against criticism, but some Sox have proven they can f***ing do the job and deserve support if they have a bad outing or two. Mark B is one of those Sox. Another IMO is Maggs. And another is JOSE V! I love Jose.

Jordan4life_2007
I knew this thread would pop up. I didn't see the game. But this has got to be the best anyone has ever seen from Buehrle. I hope he can pitch more like that. I want to see Mark kick it up to an "ace" type of level more consistently.

Chisoxfn
He was awesome, but I'm still hoping he can cut down on his hits. I loved the way he pitched tonight though. His curve was looking really sharp early and since guys expect him to be so agressive, he can be really effective throwing that curve right into the plate. Texsox
From the same article praising Kong and Freddy comes this about Mark Pitcher: Mark Buehrle, White Sox On the list because: Perhaps the least-deserving member of the Put Up Or Shut Up team, Buehrle had nonetheless seen his ERA go from 3.29 in 2001 to 3.58 to 4.14 last year. Although Chicago's poor defense didn't do him any favors, his hits per nine innings also had shot up from 7.6 to 8.9 to 9.8. 2004 performance: Buehrle's record is 9-3, but thanks mostly to his 7.9 average run support, second-most in baseball. He still is giving up a ton of hits -- a career-high 10.3 per nine innings, leading to a mediocre 4.12 ERA. Coughing up 19 homers hasn't helped. Put up or shut up: Shut up, but only if you think Buehrle is the ace-quality arm he appeared to be a few years ago. He still is a valuable pitcher. Wedge
Tex- he does sort of have a point. Mark is the guy who's on the cusp between being a solid Ace and the best Duece pitcher in the league. He's the guy that when they're reading off a list of pitchers, that the sports experts have to hem and haw about for a while before than can give you an answer if he is an Ace or not. If Mark was playing on an average team, he'd be struggling to a .500 record. Perhaps if Freddy developes into the #1, Mark will pitch better with some pressure off. At times, as this thread proves, he's brilliant.

Wong & Owens
Mark doesn't quite have the control yet to be an ace. Most ace's have dominating fastballs--Buehrle does not. He would need to be an ace in the Maddux/Glavine mold, but he doesn't have the command that either of them did in their primes. But who cares? He's an excellent pitcher, capable of beating any team on most nights.
