university of michigan admissions process is racist..it should be opposed...and this policy exactly follows the definition of racist..because is discriminates and keeps people in a certian group from following their dreams or career choices(in this case white)...thats racism...keeping people from economic gain...there is a simple way to do this where no one gets hurt...have your regular admission process followed..then if there arnt the right number of minorities you can add them in as extras to the percentage is acceptable..this last case there were only 2 people..your telling me a school the size of michigan couldnt find room for 2 more students??..no, they gotta make a politcal stand here instead...but saying to qualified applicants we cant take you because we have to take someone else less qualified based on skin color is total bulls***...

Baggs, your description of the UM admissions policy is total bulls***. The policy is not about taking "less qualifed" applicants - I am so f***ing tired of that tired old rant -

it is about ensuring diversity - with diversity a value in education - in the educational process and is a factor that is used in choosing among equally qualified candidates, a factor but not the factor - athletics, children of alums, geographical diversity vs home state representation, special academic distinctions, are among many things that play a role in the UM admissions process, in accordance with the US Supreme Court decision in Bakke - for Bush to call the process "quotas" was a bald faced lie and he knew he it because the legal brief that wass filed on his behalf fromt he Solciter General never makes that point because the UM process is not about quotas - but it was Bush playing to the race card

and speaking of how many times you have heard liberals say this or that, have you ever heard me say that? Can I state how many times I hear conservatives say things I think are defamatory? That is not substantiation of anything.

I need no lectures from the party of Strom Thurmond and Trent Lott about policies of the past in race. Progress in the Civil Rights movement has come in this country via the Democtratic party, with the need to mention Illinois' own Everett Dirksen and other moderate Republicans (where have they gone...) who assisted in passing the original Civil Rights Act.

Funny how the Twin Towers occupies a different place in people's thinking rather than the bombing of Fort Sumtner or the bombing of the Murrah Building. What is the difference? I think I can see it.

To me, waving a confederate flag is the equivilant of waving a flag for bin Laden, who killed far less people than died in a few hours on the Gettsyburg battlefield but represents an equal evil.

i dont get it...do these people really think because they can imitate others that we look at them as heros and any crazy s*** that comes out of their mouth will become rallying cries for the masses?

Unfortunately, YES, a lot of people are total sheep and live and die on every move that these people make. This "culture" is so full of star-crossed followers that some idiots don't even know the name of our Vice President, but can rattle off the title of every movie Tom Cruise has ever been in.

A huge segment of the American population is a complete embarrassment. The Kennedys are royalty, people chased another country's princess to her death, and we're more concerned with Michael Jackson's nose, Britney Spears' inflating and deflating tits and where R. Kelly's allegedly sticking his meat than we are with a potential global crisis. It's the lowest common denominator at an all-time low, and it's sad.

I cant remember the exact numbers but in a poll for 18 year olds I think it was, a good majority of them could not locate the Pacific Ocean. That is just sad. Fortunately there are enough smart kids to keep this country dominant in the future...

And just thinking about it, can you imagine the current generation running the country? Like me, wsc, wsf and bighurt as Americas leaders? Thats kinda insane. Some of the vocabulary they may use and such...

Hey roman. Here is the test.

What are you people doing to me?? I'm trying so hard to get out of politics, really I am. Let me say this. I have real life, not theoretical experience concerning that horribly divisive policy called "affirmative action." I could give you chapter and verse about real people and companies and the effect it has had. I'm a quiz show junkie. One of my favorites is a local show called Hometown High Q. It's a quiz show for local high schools. Three schools match up for each show/contest. Today one of the schools in the game was a predominately white (about 90%) suburban school. Two of the three players for that school were minority. That's the way you've got to do it. Whether it's your basketball team, symphony orchestra, law school or whatever. Set a standard, then pick the best ones whoever or whatever. If that makes me a racist then oh well, I guess I plead guilty.

if you have to discriminate to ensure diversity how is that good for the country..and its not total bulls***..those two girls sued because they had higher scores...now a case can be made that because someone coming from a ghetto doesnt have the same opportunities to succeed..via preperatio nfor these tests that if their score is close to someone coming from a richer community it could very well be that that person fro mthe ghetto is indeed smarter...but thats where my plan comes in..in my plan no one is discrimnated against...how could you be aginst that???..in my plan all 4 of those people would have gotten in..no controversy..

its not about quotas???..thats exactly what its about...its giving extra points to somebody based solely on skin color or ethniticity..while others get nothing..IT IS WRONG

about saying this and that..youre right..im sure conservatives have said just as many stupid things as liberals..but conservatives arnt the group that runs around calling everybody who doesnt agree with us racist..its liberal democrats that do that..while a klu klux klan grand wizard sit with a bid "D" next to his name in the senate...all im saying is if all these liberal democrats are going to run around and demonize our presdient or our party..they should atleast clean up their own house first..

progress in civil rights did come from the democrats..no doubting that..that was ahuge mistake by republicans...but it was 30 some years ago..times have changed..i can make an arguement that says the two parties have almost done a complete 180 since the 60's??...look at abortion..you have pro life and pro choice i nthe republican party..while the republican party still stands mostly for pro life people like tom ridge and christine todd-whitman are supported by our party..they are pro choice...name me one pro life democrat???

btw..another thing we agree on..the civil war..im not versed on the civil war..thats why i didnt jump in that arguement...i never studied it like i should have...i know the arguement about state rights and it has some merit..but there is no doubt in my mind that it was used as a viel with the real reason keeping slavery in tact...i dont know how anyone can deny that..other than that i leave that subject to you who are not as ignorant on the subject as myself..

Wasn't the governor of South Carolina three years ago a democrat? I believe he was the one fighting to keep the stars and bars flying above the statehouse in Charleston. Alot of southerners support the Confederate flag and consider it a symbol of heritage. The flag is disappearing everywhere, should they next start tearing down civil war memorials to fallen Confederate soldiers? How about anything named after Jefferson Davis? When the Union was first formed, most of our presidents had slaves under the stars and stripes. I don't think the Confederate battle flag is a part of racism, I think that racism is a part of the history of the flag. The point is the flag is history and we serve to learn from history. The moment we start erasing our past is the moment we give it more chances to be repeated.

Baggio- In 2000 the Pennsylvania Dems ran a "pro life" candidate against incumbent Republican Senator Rick Santorum. The big money Philadelphia area Dems sat on their hands, crippling candidate Ron Klinks ability to raise funds. The election was reasonably close, it went 51-46 for Santorum with 3% for third parties. Klink used to be a newman for KDKA TV in Pittsburgh. He's pretty good in front of a camera and Santorum is known to be short tempered and at times prickly. This was a winnable race for the Dems and think where they'd be with Klink in the Senate today. Unfortunately he stayed true to his "pro life" beliefs and even though most of his other views should have given Dems comfort the party big shots would not roll out the big guns to aid him.

My no politics is crumbling little by little. At least I've avoided the "crossfire" style arguing so far. :D

Hey roman. Here is the test.

Well, I took the test and got 20/20. Geography is just my thing. As a freshman last year I had like a 98% in that class. But some Americans obviously arent as aware of geography, which is sad. Here are some of the ones that really scared me:

1) 11% of Americans did not know where their own country was. Thats pathetic. When Mexicans were asked wheres Mexico only 3% did not know. So if you asked ten Americans where their own country was, one would not know.

2) 29% could not locate the Pacific! I dont even wanna talk about this one.

3) Both the questions about Afghanistan. "Where are the AlQaeda and Taliban movements based?" and "Where is Afghanistan?" The first one was under 50% and the second was 21% I believe. It was only on the front page of the news for about a year after Sept 11! Sad...

Well, thanks SI1020. I just hope that now these morons can pay attention in class and stop making all Americans look dumb...

Wow, that is truly sad. In middle school, we had to know where every country in the world was (well, I guess not like the Maldivies and such, but countries like Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan). I'm just glad my teachers cared.

I could probably locate ATLEAST 150 countries on this planet. Some of those in southern Africa might give me some trouble and I have trouble with all those tiny island countries but my geographical skills are arguably top notch.

As did I....that survey was quite possibly te easiest thing I've ever done in my life....and the sad thing is, many Americans didn't have a friggin clue about anything....though Mexicans were the worst....only like 7% of them knew where Afghanistan were....atleast they know where their own country is.

Then I think it is important that I point out to you that when Strom Thurmond ran as a Segragationist, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

Actually he left the Democratic Party, Humphrey made a speech at the 1948 convention for civil rights and that is when Thurmond walked out and ran as a 3rd party candidate - States Right Party - candidate in that odd year when there were two third parties. He did not run as a member of the Democratic party.

He returned and stayed until the civil rights era of the 1960s for the Republican Party because the Dems were becoming the party of the civil rights movement. He also left because he had no clout at all in the national party because of his views and history.
