Workers pick Internet over Caffeine

MORE workers would rather give up their morning coffee than their internet access, but employers should probably question why they love it so much.

A survey, conducted for management software firm Websense, found more than half of web-connected employees used the internet for personal reasons, with men the more frequent users.

The Web@Work 2004 study polled 500 employees and 350 information technology managers on internet and computer use in the workplace.

The survey found 49 per cent would rather abandon their morning caffeine fix if they had to choose between it and internet access, although 46 per cent were more attached to their coffee habit.

Fifty-one per cent of employees admitted to using their internet access for personal reasons for up to five hours per week, with two hours the average.
