JDsDirtySox
From the Sun Times: Without reason to rush things, Jose Valentin likely will be left at Class AAA Charlotte for at least one extra day. Valentin is eligible to come off the disabled list today, but with the Baltimore Orioles starting left-hander Eric DuBose and Juan Uribe off to a hot start, a roster move isn't expected right away. "We don't know yet,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We might give him a couple more days. I'd rather he got more at-bats down there. I don't think he's swinging the bat the way he wants to swing the bat.'' Valentin, recovering from a strained left hamstring, is 1-for-19 with 11 strikeouts, including an 0-for-4 night Monday with three strikeouts and an error. The start was similar to his start with the Sox last month when he struck out six times in his first two games batting against left-handers. Valentin is batting .271 with three home runs and eight RBI with the Sox. Uribe, though, has done much better with the big club. He is batting .377, third in the American League. Expected to be a utility player for the Sox when he was acquired in an offseason trade from the Colorado Rockies, Uribe has a nine-game hitting streak and is batting .402 (29-for-72) with four doubles, four home runs and 12 RBI in his last 19 games. When Valentin eventually returns this week, the Sox are expected to send either Kelly Dransfeldt or Jamie Burke back to Charlotte. But since he is out of options, Dransfeldt would have to clear waivers before going back to Class AAA. FIVE HOLE: With the Sox not needing a fifth starter until May 15 against the Minnesota Twins, speculation already has started as to who might get the job. Dan Wright, who was sent to Charlotte this weekend, might be recalled if he shows improvement, but others are in the mix. While Neal Cotts would seem to be an option with his 1.69 ERA in nine appearances, Guillen said the left-hander would remain a reliever for now. That leaves Charlotte right-handers Felix Diaz and Jason Grilli as options, as well as Class AA Birmingham left-hander Arnie Munoz. Diaz is 4-0 with a 2.01 ERA after five starts, while Grilli is 1-3 with a 4.45 ERA in five starts. Munoz is 4-0 with a 1.52 ERA in five starts (292/3 innings). Diaz, who has just three walks and 29 strikeouts in 31-1/3 innings, would appear to have the edge. NO WORRIES: Cotts, who started all 65 games he appeared in as a member of the Sox organization before this season, won't campaign to get a start. "I don't think I need to change any minds,'' he said. "I think I've done a decent job down in the bullpen for them. If they like me better down there, that's fine with me.'' NOTE: After playing in both games of Saturday's doubleheader and in Sunday's game as well, Paul Konerko was given the day off Monday, with Ross Gload starting at first base. Gload went 0-for-4 and is batting .207. I am not sure I want to risk losing Kelly D. I like the Tony G. type of role he can play.
southsider2k5
I am not THAT worried about Dranfeldt. He has gotten a few smart hits, but really he has no range, and isn't going to hit about .200 at the major league level.
cwsox
interesting article, thanks for sharing I thought of several responses to various portions, all of them smart ass and decided to forego that for example: Valentin, recovering from a strained left hamstring, is 1-for-19 with 11 strikeouts, including an 0-for-4 night Monday with three strikeouts and an error. sounds like he is ready to come up, to me! would be something I might say but I won't. Without reason to rush things, Jose Valentin likely will be left at Class AAA Charlotte for at least one extra day. I think that we are in no rush
Texsox
Assuming that the Sox understand options and the status on all their players, they brought him up for a reason, knowing the outcomes. Players (and teams) run out of options for a reason. They may have brought him up to determine his future with the organization. Could be we're making room in the minors. Dick Allen
Dransfeldt would have no problem clearing waivers. He is not a very good player.

If I am not mistaken and Major Leagure club can put someone on waivers and if they are claimed can withdraw them. If Kelly gets sent down first and claimed I would think the Sox can then send down Burke instead. Either one is welcome on the team and can help in their own way. I dont think the rule applies for players that are out of options. Thats how the Red Sox lost current White Sox farmhand Bry Nelson unless they just didnt care that he was taken and didnt feel it necessary to reclaim him and keep him on the roster... Al Lopez Ghost (old)
Dransfeldt would have no problem clearing waivers. He is not a very good player. You are absolutely right.
elrockinMT
Regardless, Dransfeldt will have to go somewhere soon. When the Sox need the fifth starter again, there won't be room for him. According to reports today Dransfeldt helped the Sox make up their mind on who goes down. He does and Jose is with the team on Friday in Toronto. How many teams out there need a back up infielder who only hits singles? And I might add makes errors on easy plays. You have to feel sorry for Kelly, but plays like that need to be made. I do hope he clears waivers and stays in the organization. My guess is he might be up again this year.
