Soxplosion
American and Columbian executed Assassination attempt of Columbian pres. OK, so maybe we shouldnt forget about Iraq but we shouldnt go to war with him. I would love to see Saddam dead but at the cost of American lives, no, war is not neccesary. Columbia is a much bigger threat. Here is a country where rebels almost assassinated the President (they killed 15 other people in the process) and then they shot down a plane, shot two of the passengers and kidnapped the other three, who were Americans. The drugs that these FARC clowns smuggle into this country will hurt and kill more Americans than Saddams possibly inexistent weapons of mass destruction. Im not saying we should go to war but we must do everything in our power to make sure Columbian President Alvaro Uribe stays in power. Alvaro Uribe is an American ally. Saddam may be insane but hes not stupid. He knows that if he uses any weapons of mass destruction its his own suicide. These rebel forces will continue to support the drug cartels that smuggle their crap into our country and that will have much more of a local impact than Saddam will ever have. Saddam is a maniac but hes a maniac in his own country. These people are maniacs, both there and here...
cwsox
Psycho, thanks for the links - I will check them later today - you are very right that South and Central American concerns are very real and very ignored and there is horrendous violence that we have been oblivious to
LowerCaseRepublican
President Uribe fumagates the peasant's crops, on average 8 out of 10 labor activists are assassinated. Columbia is a military dictatorship and much of the Columbian military is trained at the School of the Americas (now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation). Then again, the U.S. never met a dictator they didn't like. The FARC, I do condemn what they do. I actually got to meet some people this past November that have lost family members to the FARC and to the Colombian paramilitary dictatorial regime. The Columbian government is also quite proficient in cocaine smuggling, OldRoman. But as long as the government is anti-communist, it doesn't matter how oppressive it is. We learned that with the Pinochet regime amongst tons of others. The FARC and the Columbian military dictatorship are just about equally as evil...that's not my opinion. That was the concensus of the people I talked to that had lost family and friends to the FARC/Columbian military. If the Columbian military wasn't so incredibly s***ty in human rights (and even the UN Truth Commission says that Columbia is one of the worst countries in human rights violations) and dealt so many drugs to the US then the FARC wouldn't be in existance. The repression of their human rights caused the FARC to go whacko...and the FARC got out of control.

So maybe I was wrong on some of the smaller facts but my main point is that the crap that comes from these clowns will hurt us more than Iraq ever will... LowerCaseRepublican
Well, we fund the Columbian military with weapons, money, and training. They won't hurt us cuz they know we'd yoink their funding. To the U.S. human rights don't matter....just look at this. Columbian peasants are being massacred on a daily basis and we f***ing fund the regime that is doing it for the simple fact that the regime is hardline anti-communist/socialist. And at the anti-war rally I was at, I do have to commend the comments made by the pro-war activists. They consisted of middle fingers, a guy swerving his car to try to hit us (despite us being away from the road) and watching that guy get into a fender bender cuz of it and a guy in the passenger side of a car that nearly fell out of the car onto the freeway just to say 'f*** the iraqis'. But in London, there were 750,000 anti-war protesters. There were over 150,000 in Australia and they expected 500,000 in Spain. Early estimates from the police about the NYC protest was that over 24 blocks were massed with anti-war protesters. Maybe now Bush will get the message that people don't want war when there are diplomatic peaceful solutions.
