Harry Chappas
mike piazza was drafted in the last round in whichever year it was... hows that for a nice pickup As a favor to his godfather (Tommy Lasorda.) Wasn't Don Mattingly like in the 23rd round or something like that.

southsider2k5
f***, look at some of those UDFA. That is very misleading because not all countries are subject to the draft, such as Dominican and Asian players.

Yes, but it means that if anything else a s***load of future impact talent will NOT come from early 1st round of this draft.

BrandoFan
Feel free to add your candidates like Mattingly, I am sure I missed quite a few. The draft cut-off point was arbitrary, probably within last 25 years, although I slipped in a few exceptions.
CSF
I've always thought the 39th round draft pick wasn't too shabby. 54 wins and counting.
BrandoFan
It's just amazing how most of these guys were passed on over and over again. Funny how 4th pick Valido may some day surprise the hell out of all of us...all the while can't miss "studs" like Borchard and Abbott fizzle. Life is funny like that. BrandoFan
Unbelievable, ain't it? And it's not as if these guys were slow to develop. All 3 (and many others on the list) basically came into the majors ready to dominate.
DBAHO
More news on the draft, The June draft might be the weakest ever, according to a veteran scout. Two potential top-five draft picks, Long Beach State RHP Jered Weaver and Florida State SS Stephen Drew, will be represented by agent Scott Boras, and talk already is circulating that Weaver, the younger brother of Dodgers RHP Jeff Weaver, will demand a bonus between $10 million and $12 million if the Padres make him the No. 1 pick. The Padres also will consider Drew (the younger brother of J.D.) and Rice RHP Jeff Niemann. But Drew wouldn't be a fit unless he moved to the outfield. Padres SS Khalil Greene is a Rookie of the Year candidate and Class AAA 2B Josh Barfield is the organization's top prospect. . . .
BrandoFan
The June draft might be the weakest ever, according to a veteran scout. But that's the point: you DON'T know how "good" this draft is gonna be until 3-4 years from now, if then. It may end up being very weak as they predict, or it may end up producing 5 HOF'ers. 12 Mill bonus? lmao
BrandoFan
Does anyone know what Jared Weaver throws, velocity and pitch-type wise?
southsider2k5
Does anyone know what Jared Weaver throws, velocity and pitch-type wise? I found this on BA Alvarez and Weaver are the best 1-2 punch in the country that I can conceive of. They make you swing and miss a lot. Weaver has power and command. He really took it to us, but we're not alone on that. He has great fastball command, and he's a clone of his brother. He's 91-92 mph, drops down a little, and has an outstanding slider and a plus change. Alvarez dominated us with a fastball-change combination. He throws the fastball anywhere he wants and isn't afraid to pitch inside with it. His command is as good as anybody, and his change is outstanding. I thought his curve was average. BrandoFan
So he's a Matt Clement clone -- or is he closer to his scumbag brother?
southsider2k5
So he's a Matt Clement clone -- or is he closer to his scumbag brother? Sounds like stuff-wise he is just like his bro. Hopefully this kid has some kind of a mental make up. Jeff Weaver would be a start pitcher if he had anything between the ears.

Chisoxfn
Great Stuff mixed with excellent command. Wouldn't quite call him Prior, but he's in that notch when you talk about college pitchers.
