witesoxfan
18th Picks who have made the bigs. Who knows, maybe we can find another Rex Hudler! Doesn't look like a great track record. But then again, the 38th round didn't have a great track record when the Sox drafted Mark Buehrle!
DBAHO
Doesn't look like a great track record. But then again, the 38th round didn't have a great track record when the Sox drafted Mark Buehrle! It's not like an NFL Draft where the top picks are goin to be contribute rite away, it's easily the most unpredictable draft. I hope redandwhite is right and we get one of the Rice pitchers to slip to us.
False Alarm
Great Stuff mixed with excellent command. Wouldn't quite call him Prior, but he's in that notch when you talk about college pitchers. FWIW, a little more on this. i took this from a BA q&a a month or so ago: Weaver is very good, but his numbers are so unfathomable that I think he's getting overrated by the general public. I'd project him as more of a No. 2 starter than as a classic No. 1, and he's not the next Mark Prior. Both his fastball and breaking ball are a half-grade or full grade behind where Prior's were when he came out of Southern California. Weaver throws an 88-94 mph fastball with lots of life, but his low three-quarters arm slot has led to debate about how much of weapon his slider will be against big league lefthanders. he also said weaver's amazing command helps him get the most out of these pitches. BrandoFan
Who knows, maybe we can find another Rex Hudler! Am I missing something here? Hudler looks like a very mediocre player. Now if we're talking about 23rd pick....

TLAK
Am I missing something here? Hudler looks like a very mediocre player. Now if we're talking about 23rd pick.... It was a poor attempt at wit, chiding the poster Rex Hudler who I consider a fine and knowing poster. Rex the player had a 13 year career in the bigs, no mean feat. You've probably already been there but for everybody else, here is Rex's BR stats. Rex
YASNY
The best guy on that list was Carlos May and he would have been even better if he wouldn't have had his thumb blown off. He lost 80% of his power due to that accident.
BrandoFan
I think we're getting off-topic here. Seems the failure rate is pretty high. I wonder if they use modern technology to fullest extent when evaluating potential draftees these days. I mean, you can only get so much from a player's HS numbers and try out sessions. Like extensive tests to measure physiological and psychological attributes., whichih when used with statistical context (hs, college track record) could maybe aid in projecting the ceiling/developmental curve. BrandoFan
I wonder if actual scouts post on this site.
