NUKE_CLEVELAND
I watched part of the hearings from this morning with Rummy answering questions and there were a few things that caught my attention. -Seems like this prison abuse thing was being investigated since January by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Army -In March the DOD held a press conference, which CNN of all people attended and asked a bunch of questions about it, and said there was a problem with abuse at the prison and the story didn't take. This one gets bold letters cause it was said by a Democrat and it was right on the money. From Sen Joe Lieberman: "I havent heard anyone in the Islamic world apologize for murdering 3000 people on 9-11" BINGO!!! Additionally, the secretary apoligized to the Iraqi's who were mistreated and was right to do so. I forget who said it but someone on TV mentioned that the way we treat these people is what separates us. Despite what the left is saying this is not Rummy's fault and I think in the final analysis this will be found to be the work of a small number of "soldiers" who had a bad breakdown in dicipline. YASNY
I think you will find that this was something that was known about all the way up the chain of command. If not, it's their fault anyway. With the prisoners at Gitmo, they blew off the Geneva convention with the foriegners and the Constitution rights of any US citzens. I can see them taking the same smug attitude with Iraqi prisoners as well. Of course, this also drew much more world critcism than the repeated rapes of Jessica Lynch. Nuke, Does this make sense. We want to save you from Sadaam and his torture, and evil ways. So WE are going to torture you. Isn't that better We go in because they have WMD. Can't find the WMD Why not? Because it's a big country, they could be hid anywhere. To bad in our huge government no one thought of that before. So now we're there to liberate the Iraqi people We torture the Iraqi prisoners Oops, why are we there? Maybe no plan? Maybe we're making this up as we go? Justifying behavior by least common denomintor turns us into the lowest common denominator. Are you suggesting we can start crashing airplanes into buildings because it happened to us? We have to be the example of the behavior we talk about. We cannot say torture is bad, we need to stop it, then do it.

I don't condone torturing the Iraqi POWs, but keep in mind, they are prisoners of WAR. These aren't people that were busted for smoking dope in the park, they were captured while trying to do harm to and/or kill American troops. I know that there is a Geneva Convention, but, let's keep a little perspective here.

The trouble with all that is that from what I'm seeing here these appear to be the actions of a select few and not the policy of the whole. Yea. and even more trouble is that Rummy foreshadowed that there is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY worse stuff that will come out. Pot, kettle, kettle, pot. And we will NOT overcome this. This country is too fragile in this element to overcome it. I hope I'm wrong, but there's too many people that hate the thought of why we're over there and this just empahsizes that point, actions of a few or not. Texsox
Remember Gulf War 1? Iraqi soldiers were defecting, tossing down their weapons, and begging US Soldiers to capture them. Do you think after the world sees how we treated these POW, enemy soldiers will be as eager to throw down their weapons? These handfull of soldiers just increased the risk to every US soldier. I don't think they threw down their weapons because they thought they would get 5-star treatment in a US prison camp. They did that because they knew they would be dead before they could s*** their pants if they didn't.
israel4ever
As I said before, I cannot condone the torture of the Iraqi POWs...it is just wrong. Remember though, these are enemy soldiers, who would kill American troops at the "drop of a hat" if/when able to do so. The torture/humiliation is NOTHING compared to being killed! I think for them it's worse. To destroy their honor when we're supposed to be above all that, is just sick. Look, we all know it happens, but wait until they get ahold of some of our soldiers. You think what you saw WAS sick, what will come of it is going to be 10 times worse.

For a culture that welcomes death, like the (radical) Muslims, you are right, torture is worse for them. I think what bothered the Muslim world the most is that (at least) one of the "torturers" was a woman, and their society is very misogynistic! Normal people would rather be photographed naked than be killed though!
