BOSTON (AP) -- American League Rookie of the Year Angel Berroa and the Kansas City Royals agreed Friday to an $11 million, four-year contract extension.

The shortstop, who is making $372,500 this season, gets $500,000 in 2005, $2 million in 2006, $3.25 million in 2007 and $4.75 million in 2008. Kansas City has a $5.5 million option for 2009 with a $500,000 buyout.

"Angel was a key component to our success last season," general manager Allard Baird said. "It was important for us to sign him to a long-term deal as we continue to build this ballclub."

Berroa, 26, hit .287 with 17 homers and 73 RBIs last year. This season, he was hitting .214 with one homer and four RBIs when migraine headaches forced him onto the 15-day disabled list after only 14 games.

Ungodly overrated along with Corey Patterson.

Funny you say that considering Sox are KINGS of Overrated.

Garland? Kevin Brown he is not.

Wright? :puke

Harris? Robbie is spinning in his grave right about now.

Crede? If Scott Rolen had a slow bat and took forever to release the ball.

Berroa and Patterson are "bad ball" (read: stupid) hitters live bats. While mediocre defensively, both have the tools to win a Gold Glove. Both are legitimate threats on the pads -- none of that Aaron Rowand, 10 steals a year BS. I would take either of them on my team in a heart beat. They won't win you a championship, but as supporting players they might just thrive.

Great signing by the Royals.. it's funny how he took less than Michael Young did though...

Players who are worse usually get less cash.

Magglio Ordonez will not get $15 mill a year because he is not as good as Vlad Guerrero.
